Anyway to stop them? Highlighting their name and clicking 'blacklist' comes up with the error 'Cannot locate character with that name'. I've managed to blacklist one out of 98340174983274 that seems to spam me.
Thanks, RobP

blacklisting is useless imho, they only use a name once or twice then switch to another, that's why you could not find the character to blacklist.
I found for myself the best thing to do was to go into 'character' menu and turn off sound notifications from tells.... now if I could only turn off random friend invites, as that is another tactic RMT use. (I don't care for the /busy icon on my character)
Thanks! I'll go turn off the sounds.
I'm on PC and I've had my tell messages off since the game started... I'm sure I've missed a few pms from real players. A few wrongly ignored messages compared to miles and miles of spamlines is worth it imo.

I prefer to get them banned ASAP rather than just ignoring the problem. This page allows you to send a message straight to the people that ban them:

Getting them banned isn't happening fast enough. Enough is enough with these guys already. It wouldn't be so bad if they sent their crap in world chat or something, but they are always sending tells, tells, and more tells. One of a few things need to happen here; 1. Harassing players will tells to buy gil is just that, harassing and needs to be dealt with. 2. The ability to be able to block more then 200 people, which I know mine is already full and it is full of these gil sellers. 3. An easier way for player to be able to report these people to SE and get them out of the game. Enough is enough. Heck, put out a message to everyone, anyone found using websites to buy gil will have their account suspended too. The websites are listed in these tells, so I know 2 or 3 of them if you want them. This needs to end.
If you read the notices on Lodestone SE recently banned over 2100 accounts in a week.
They need to ban gil buyers !!!!!! Period.
Reduced demand = Reduced Supply
I just delete the oldest blacklist entries whenever I have to make new ones. And buying gil with real money DOES get you banned. But yes, they're well aware of the desire to make it so we can just right click and "Report as RMT" ... an official response as to how this is progressing would always be nice, but even without I'm confident it's on their to-do list.
They're shutting the barn door after the horse has already bolted.
SE takes in reports, considers them, and then eventually gets around to banning the accounts involved, so yes, they are doing something, but they're doing it too late. (In fact, with the current cumbersome reporting system, by the time someone even sends a report, it's likely to be too late.) In the meanwhile, the gilsellers have already had plenty of time to get their money's worth from those accounts.
The gilseller spam will only stop when it becomes unprofitable, and that means monitoring and blocking it in real time, before the spammer can get enough advertisements sent out to bring in any profit. (Most people getting this spam react with annoyance, not with a desire to go buy gil from them. They have to send their ads to lots of players in hopes of finding one who will become their customer. SE needs to block them before they can get that far, before they get that successful hit that will make the spam worth sending.) As long as these spam accounts are profitable, the sellers will just keep replacing any accounts that get banned. Block them before they can make a profit, and it will stop.
That too, and I expect some of those banned accounts are buyers. But the ad spamming accounts are the easiest to identify and eliminate, so they're the low-hanging fruit that can be addressed first, so it's getting really annoying that it hasn't been.
That's commendable but you can spend all day doing that and they will keep on coming.
I tried it. I was leveling my Miner one day and since I had the time decided to file a report for all RMTs that would spam me.
But honestly I prefer to play the game and not allow spammers to ruin my experience.
For spammers this is a business, so I'm sure they can "pay" someone to sit and create trial accounts and have some program spam the server lists of names.
Besides, all SE needs to do is create a character and have someone behind it. It will get spammed as much as anyone else and they can easily do something with that. Who knows? Maybe that's what they do.
