Hmm, I'd like to see Zidane's outfit in the game, too.
Better yet, I'd like Kuja's outfit, too.

Squall was very much a self-doubter, but he was a military-minded individual, meaning he just didn't jump headfirst into stupid situation.Show me one time Zidane was ever a wuss. And you can't count the scene where everyone is running around from glops.
Zidane was remarkably brave, honorable, thoughtful, and confident for a FF main character. Squall was a whiny little self-doubter; Tidus was and out-and-out whiny slag; Cloud was a liar and a huge wuss, couldn't even admit to himself who he really was; Vaan was totally overshadowed by Baltheir; Lightning was in FFXIII so she doesn't count. In terms of 3-d era FF games, Zidane was probably the least wussy protagonist.
People call Tidus whiny, but in terms of personality, the clostest person I can think of is Zidane. Tidus was a superstar, with a superstar mentality, thrown into a world where he has no status.
Cloud wasn't a liar, and was just about the opposite of a wuss...a few hours into the game, i seem to recall you rushing headfirst into the most heavily guarded military building on the planet to rescue some chick he'd only known for a few days. Even the pre-nibelhiem incident cloud wasn't a wuss, considering he's the one who dropped Sephiroth. FYI, the cloud from KH2/Advent Children and the Cloud from FF7 are so drastically different, they might as well be different characters.

Tidus's whininess was what would happen if someone from a modern setting with zero combat/survival training into a harsh fantasy setting. Tidus was us... D:
That's what made it so great. The game didn't have to be silly and go out of its way to explain Spira to the player...because the main character was a total noob. I never understand why people described Tidus as "whiny" when the stuff that happened to him happened to him...and he rolled with the punches like a champ...AND takes the hot girl in the process.
Contrast with FF13, where the game makes nnnnooooooooooooo attempt to ensure the player knows what the hell its talking about...or ever makes us actually care. By the time i got to the end of FFXIII, I honestly just didn't care. "Save cocoon? Oh, you mean the a-holes that's literally been trying to kill me the whole game??"

Tidus = whiny has always baffled me. Maybe the very beginning when he's completely clueless, but the handful of occasions I can think of where I'd classify him as "whiny" he's more than justified to be. He's very emotionally open for an FF protagonist, but it never annoyed me. In fact it's the reason he left such an impression on Spira, his honest and matter-of-fact attitude to their rigid ways was why things played out the way they did.
