I think XIV is doing pretty well at depth and subtlety. Sure, Warriors of Light and other FF tropes, and Dragons and some wider fantasy tropes... the game's got all those. But we also got Gaius van Baelsar, the whole Kobold thing, and if you've been doing Coil and following other hints... the Dragons :O

In short, SE's been giving us plenty of grey areas. At least from my perspective.

(Can we just murderize all the Ascians already so the interesting villains can have more camera time?)

Not explicitly, but you missed Doga and Unei's explanation for why the Allagans resurrected Xande in the first place. They built their Crystal Tower to provide all the energy they ever needed, and it did. It did its job so well they no longer had goals to strive for, leading to the slow but steady decline of their civilization. Xande, our metaphorical "darkness," was revived to counter out the "light" that had stifled their growth as a civilization.

It's also meant as a reference to the decadence and decline of the Roman Empire, but it seems rather odd that they went out of their way to specifically point out the Tower as a root cause of the problem in a story that ultimately wanted to pass it off as a "light" that should be given to the people of the future. Just my two cents, but I have done the legwork on this one.

The Shiva storyline made me question just this. If you remember there is warning that maybe the side we are fighting for is not all they may seem and then Shiva said the exact same line from when we first start the game, hear, feel, think. So makes me wonder what is really going to happen with the intro of 3.0. Here is the video Cutscene think it's around 2:56 where Iceheart says it.

Aww, but I hear the dark side has cookies... and Darth Vader!

As has been mentioned before, the ascians appear to be the warriors of darkness. It may one day turn out that they're the "good" guys... but I doubt it.

I find it odd that so many people mention Gaius, but nobody has mentioned Nael Van Darnus. As the main villain of the Seventh Umbral Era storyline of 1.0, he embodied light. White armor, bright laser attacks, and seeking to purify a heretical land that put their belief in false gods, Nael was a holy, "light" bad guy, much in the way Alexander was in FFXI (and one could also draw parallels with Gaius and FFXI Odin)

Well, your example actually makes Gaius even more interesting, in my eyes. Gaius skirted with treason when he helped you stop Nael in version 1.

Gaius was in many ways an example of a "dark" hero done well. Any other time you'd be adversaries (and were, in the 1.0 and 2.0 storylines). However, he helped you anyway because it suited his needs. I recall his reasoning being something like "I wish to rule Eorzea, not a smoking crater."
