Major noob looking for friends, and a few basic questions.

Ok, so I'm just starting out (I played quite a bit of 1.0 and a little of the open beta but I'm starting again and I don't remember much). I've created a character on Tiamat but it seems quite quiet and everyone I see is level 50. Is this normal? I was hoping to find some other low level people to progress with just to make it a little more fun.

Plus I'm from Australia and I've read that Tonberry seems to be the unofficial Australian server, but it was full when I created a character. Would it be worth trying to wait to get a spot in Tonberry or should I stay in Tiamat?

Also, just some basic questions about the game. I think I recall that in 1.0 the only thing you could really do with a party were the levequests. Is that still the case? Can I do quests with other people?

Would greatly appreciate any help any one would be willing to offer. Thanks.

I'm on Goblin and I see plenty of people leveling their classes, from the lowest level to highest level areas. I think a lot of people that have been playing have grinded all their classes to 50 though, especially now that we're so close to a level cap raise. However, Tiamat may not be a particularly populated server. I don't know anything about it, but it's pretty low on xivsoul's population list (even though it's mid scan right now).

You can do anything that isn't a main story or class quest teleport-in instance in a party. Those ones are meant to be one person only - you can't even go in with your chocobo companion. They're generally short little things like protecting someone or defeating a mini-boss sort of thing that you have to conquer on your own.

Quests (Main Story quests included), FATEs, Leves, dungeons (of course), anything else really can be done in a party. The only exceptions that come to mind are Grand Company leves and the previously mentioned solo instances. Quests that you do with other people don't make you do everything twice, either, if you were worried about that - a lot of them have purple "trigger zones" that start a battle once you cross their lines, and it won't go off twice because you and another party member both crossed. Whoever goes over first spawns the monster(s) and they count for both of your quests when they're killed.

It just depends on if you want to be with other Australians. I personally don't care, but if you do and have the money to, you can buy a character transfer over to Tonberry. It bypasses the server locks.

    Thank you!

Like I said, I'm just starting out so I'm not that worried about starting from scratch on a new server, I just can't decide if it's worth waiting for a spot on tonberry.

Also, and this might seem like a bit of a dumb question, what's the best way to find people to party with? No one really seems to be communicating. I played 1.0 on PC and the chatbox was quite busy, but now no one is saying anything. And I have a headset but I haven't heard anyone or figured out how to chat to anyone. Sorry, I know these are super noob questions. I feel like there's probably something very obvious I'm missing.

Hmm..I'm not really sure about that one, because I'm not a social person. People generally talk in their free companies (guilds) or linkshells (private chat channels), and I don't see conversations in shout (area chat). Try to find a nice free company that will help with your questions, or make friends with people you come across in game (there are lots of people that hang out in the markets of each city. try talking to people or finding an FC there, maybe?)

I'm sure you'll find people eventually. Our Free Company on Goblin is end-game based and still doesn't mind taking in new players and helping them out whenever they need it. My boyfriend and I have a private linkshell that we've invited new players into before so that they can ask us any questions they need to as they play. There's definitely got to be other people like us on other servers.

FFXIV doesn't have voice chat at all.

I probably should have clarified I'm playing on PS4, which is why I was curious about how to communicate. It's a bit more tedious to type messages . I'm assuming it probably works the same though. Would have to create a voice conversation through the console rather than the game itself.

Most players on the PS4 get a wireless usb keyboard in order to communicate with the general population, which I highly recommend. A cheap kb will do. There is no voice chat supported by XIV itself. Some PS4 players will join PS4 linkshells or Free Company's and use PS4's party chat system to talk to each other. My FC has both PC and PS4 players, we all use keyboards to talk in general although sometimes I'll chat with the other PS4 players via PS4 party chat as well.

Players mostly socialize via Free Companies (guilds), Linkshells, party or tells. If you have a question you can /sh to the zone and will probably get an answer depending on the time of day, and there can be some general chit chat in popular areas like Revenant's Toll and the Manderville Gold Saucer but people generally use the private channels to talk. The Gold Saucer will be accessible after a lvl 15 quest in Ul'dah, and the Main Scenario will take you to Mor Dhona/Rev Toll in the 40's although you can make a run for it earlier if you take a chocobo and stick to the roads.

Hey its always nice to see people coming back! Also about making a character on tonberry, if you actually transfer your character over to tonberry you shouldnt have to wait for a spot. If you dont want to i would say wait for a spot, cause i know of alot of aussies that play on there ^^. I would say come to balmung but around aussie primetime it can be a lil quieter. I hope you find some people to play with though! GL buddy!

I would recommend Tonberry for you. Being an MMO, the social side of the game is (at least IMO) important, particularly when you hit level 50 and preforming groups for content becomes a really good idea.

It's normal to see most people at level 50. Leveling does not take long in this game at all.

    Welcome and good luck!
