One thing I think is that while you'll need a vanilla copy for every console and system you own, you'll only need the collector's edition for one of them. I'll probably buy a PC collector's edition and a PS4 vanilla version, depending on how they end up priced.

If they go the XI route (Which is most likely the case), all expansion gear is added to the core game. Only thing is, if the platform doesn't have the expansion installed, it gives you an error saying you can't enter an expansion area. But yes, you need to buy the expansion twice. And yes, you need vanilla XIV for the expansion.

It was impossible to log into the game on PS2, if my character was currently in an Adoulin area.

It is possible that something similar may happen for Heavensward. If your character is in Ishgard, and you try to log in on a machine that does not have Heavensward installed, you may not be able to log in at all.
    Yep, this as well.

I play on 3 machines so I too would like to know this. Buying it THRICE is out of the question. In XI expansions were tied to your account not the system.

Anyone feel like linking this license agreement people keep throwing around like it's gospel? There is no official confirmation of anything yet, so I'd really wish people would stop talking like they've released anything on the subject, because they haven't. Any details of that nature will get a Lodestone news post, and there isn't one yet. And the PAX East panel isn't until Saturday.

Pretty sure the expansion will be available for purchase on PSN for players who only use the one platform, but requiring a separate key for every platform a player wants to use is just silly, especially considering the (assumed) price tag. They should know already how many players that would alienate, so I highly doubt they'd pull anything like that.

To publish a game on a console you have to license it with the console, the agreement involves things like getting a cut of the profit per game sold, update costs, and exclusivity. This is how console makers can lose money making a console but still come out happy as a fat chocobo. Nintendo vs Tagen is sort of those moments (I'm sure others) where game makers figured they ought to license their game with the console owner.

It is not /known/ what their console license entails; although, you (I?) can bet Sony would think about and not being excited to say "oh sure PC versions of your DLC/Expansions can work on our console for free as well" - when they could get paid for it instead. So while not known, if I had to guess I think the safer guess is either both or at least buying the one that requires a license (you don't need to license your game for a PC, thankfully lol).

On the flipside, Sony's license agreements obligate them to distribute game updates at no cost to players and also allow publishers to distribute DLC at prices they choose, including "free." Sony gets payed either way, and many publishers are starting to see the benefit of footing these costs themselves, especially for products that already turn a tidy profit.

It all comes down to how it's distributed. Obviously the physical disk will provide a faster install than a version purchased off of PSN, and in the event of either of those Sony gets a cut no problem. In the event that an expansion-activated account downloads the update direct from SE's own patch servers, they have no reason to object since they aren't actually handling anything beyond the PSN account details they already agreed to when the player bought the base game.
