I just realized something about the Expansion

Since I have a license for PC, and a license for PS4. Am I gonna have to buy 2 copies of the expansion or 1 copy will serve both? Because currently my subscription lets me log into both systems.

So lets say I buy the PC version of the expansion and not PS4, I log into my PC, put on some exclusive expansion gear, then go to the expansion area and log out. Then turn on my PS4 and log in, what would happen?

Probably some message saying your character is unavailable. No matter what location in game you are in. Once your account registers as a Heavensward account, I would assume this would be their course of action.

You will need to buy 2 separate expansions for each device just like you had to with the base game.

An official answer has not been made available; however, knowing console licensing I imagine that either SE is paying Sony or that you will need to buy at least a PS copy. Whether or not the PS copy applies back to computer would be up to SE. Of course they could have also worked a contract that includes smoother customer purchases (probably again relating to SE paying Sony lol).

Speaking as someone who doesn't have 100 dollars after tax to spend on license upgrades at the moment, I can safely say I'm glad its not soon, because in dreading my bank account when it comes out.

Even though your subscription allows you to log in on both, the expansion disc has files which need to be installed on your machines of choice to be able to enter those areas ingame (It was the same for FFXI on Xbox 360, PS2 and PC - Need expansion discs for each machine you play the game on).

I imagine you would need a copy for both PC and PS4 (In my case PS4 and PS3) of the expansion.

Usually, logging into an account which has that expansion is all it takes. It should automatically download the 'update' which would effectively be the expansion pack.

It depends how they decide to do it. If its like other games where you pretty much just buy the license then it shouldnt be a problem. The content comes by way of a software update, and the license is what grants you access to it. Content updates happen on PS4 all the time. This is very different from the original client where your PS4/3 didnt have FFXIV at all so you had to buy it. Like Destiny, the expansion was downloaded on release day and was there, just waiting to be unlocked.

Its possible that they could engineer it to not download the expansions exclusive content unless youre licensed for that specific platform but that just seems unnecessary and underhanded... even for SE.

In FFXI, SE decided not to make the "Seekers of Adoulin" expansion available for PS2 in most parts of the world. I had the game both on PC and PS2, and so was only able to install that expansion on PC. If I logged off in an Adoulin area, and attempted to log in on PS2 - I would get an error. It was impossible to log into the game on PS2, if my character was currently in an Adoulin area.

It is possible that something similar may happen for Heavensward. If your character is in Ishgard, and you try to log in on a machine that does not have Heavensward installed, you may not be able to log in at all.

You will have to buy a copy for each platform you play on. The reason for this will be down to the license agreement with Sony. If you could buy the expansion for PC and use that to play expansion content on console then Sony would not be getting a cut of those sales despite it being used to play on their platform. I have no doubt at all that you will be required to buy a separate copy for each platform simply because Sony will want that cut of the console sales.
