Someone paid for that game time. It's really the basis of the whole system, people buying more game time than they need so they can sell the excess to other players for gil.
@Jandor
Yes, someone else paid for it. The person who then buys the Plex/Time scroll currency with gil in order to maintain their subscription still did not pay a dime for their subscription, hence trying to get "something for nothing", and before anyone come back with a " but they spent gil", gil is a made up currency that exists within a game and does not and should not have a direct correlation to real world money.
Again, look at the quote from that post in which one of the most vehement defenders of the systems admits that they want to be able to play the game without having to pay actual money for it.

Well... yeah? Disregarding any effects this may have, who would want to pay when they could instead not?
Choice is obvious.
Can we stop bumping this post ?

Oh well, he's never contradicted himself before!Yoshi said this will NEVER happen... /thread
Also, it's not up to him.
Doesn't mean it will happen either.
Besides, his words on the matter are not as powerless as you think.
Just to remind you, he saved FFXIV from its original huge failure, and SE's financial ass at the same time.
If he says that, right now, FFXIV is successful enough and doesn't need any kind of economical change in its model, we don't have any reason not to trust him on that matter.
FFXIV is not a shitty F2P with an expected 2 years lifespan.
Oh but you can rest assured he's in that discussion. It may not be up to him solely, but he's definitely involved. He IS the director of the game after all. Keep clinging to that hope that somehow the Director doesn't have enough pull or knowledge of the topic to say what he said in that interview. Won't make it any more real to repeat the mantra over and over.
They were very clear. Most of the players are happy (80%) and therefore Square is content with the current model. Find a way to deal with it.
To be fair, PLEX isn't really free 2 play like Elder Scrolls is (the comparison made in the article), somebody is paying for the subscriptions. Like the current cash shop, this is more of a modification on the pay 2 play system. The fee is still being paid every month.
The real proponents of this are those with way too much money and those who believe this will help combat the absurd RMT spam that's been going on lately.
They're content because it makes money, not because costumers are happy. If they see it'll bring more profit this way, they'll switch in a second. But keep thinking they care about your happiness if they're not getting as much money as they think they should.Most of the players are happy (80%) and therefore Square is content with the current model.
