Questions about cross platform and general couple gaming

I'm new to this game, and me and my BF are both really excited about getting started, but we have a ton of questions and no one to ask so I hope some kind souls will be able to answer us here

    1) My BF wants the game on the PS4, I am between PC or PS4. At first I thought once you bought the game on one platform you could play it on all, but that seems to be incorrect? You only need a single subscription pr account though right? And your character will be available on another platform?

    2) Is recruit-a-friend cross platform?

    3) If we buy the collector's edition from the PS store, will we have access to our character's CE items if we play on the PC?

4)Is there a way for us to quest together from day one even if we start in different cities?

    5) Which is more newbie friendly between archer and thaumaturge?

    6) Will we be at a disadvantage if we choose race/clan completely based on looks?

Thanks in advance for reading my very long first post and helping us out <3

    4) I believe you have to complete atleast to your main story quest to level 10 before you can go between cities.Though I don't think you can actually do the main/side quests together, unless it involves party play. I could be wrong. When you do dungeon runs and the such then you will be able to do those together, anything that requires a party to complete. I should add too any open world content can be done in a party like FATES or treasure hunts.

    6) that will make no difference.

As for the other questions I don't know, welcome, good luck to the both of you.

    One more question:

    7) Is it possible to do the trial cross platform so you can try it out and choose what you want to buy it for?

    1) You have to buy the game for the platform that you want, it doesn't work cross platform. Pretty sure you only need 1 subscription per account no matter the platform.

    5) I think Archer would be a bit easier to play and understand. Thaumaturge is a bit harder to play but later in the game becomes extremely powerful. So it is a matter of preference. Archer deals high sustained damage and gains the ability to buff their party members with songs at higher levels once you unlock it's job: Bard. Thaumaturge turns into a black mage later and gains massive area of effect damage potential, at the cost of managing your mana pool by switching between astral fire and astral ice. They also recently buffed their single target damage as well.

But keep in mind that once you do your main story quests to level 10 or so, you will be able to unlock all of the classes by talking to the respective guild receptionist. So if you start thaumaturge and don't like it, you can go and switch to archer and start leveling that later, all on the same character! The beauty of this game is that it allows you to play everything. Many players including myself have been playing this game since 2010 and have all of the classes leveled to 50. The game becomes really fun with all of the options available to you.

    I hope this helps!

Welcome to the game! My fiancee and I play together. I'd suggest one of you, at least, consider a healer or a tank to level up first. There are alot of dungeons in the Main Story Quests that have to be completed before continuing and dps queues are poor; doubly so if you're 2 dps at the same time. Offsetting it with a tank/dps, healer/dps, or tank/healer would be the best way to go though.

You buy the game for each platform you want to play on for each account. Each game you buy comes with 30day game time attached.

    2) Is recruit-a-friend cross platform?
I don't know, it might be because its on the account which can have any of the systems on it

    3) If we buy the collector's edition from the PS store, will we have access to our character's CE items if we play on the PC?
So long as one game is Flagged CE, the account is CE.

4)Is there a way for us to quest together from day one even if we start in different cities?
If you start in different cities, (Limsa is isolated, but Gridania/Ul'dah can reach each other) you can do the side quests together. The Main Story Quests, however, are locked into the other city until you do the Airship Pass quest around 15 and then Unlock the first dungeon (the start is different depending on which city you started as) Within the MSQs there are SOLO instanced battles but they usually dont take much time.

    5) Which is more newbie friendly between archer and thaumaturge?
Honestly, both are pretty friendly. Archer probably a little more so.

    6) Will we be at a disadvantage if we choose race/clan completely based on looks?
There are minor stat differences between races that wash out by the time you hit 50 depending on how you allocate your atribute points. These can be reset.

    7) Is it possible to do the trial cross platform so you can try it out and choose what you want to buy it for? idk about it being cross platform trial, but on PC you can use a controller to test out a good portion of the PS4 gameplay. Some menues etc might be a bit different though; unsure about that.

    Good Luck!!

PC and PS4 both have the same UI and both support Keyboard/Mouse and Gamepad interfaces, so the trial for both is essentially the same thing. Most people I know that have a PS4 and PC tend to play on the PS4 mostly because they have more comfortable chairs where the PS4 is. You will want to have a Keyboard available for communication in either case, though, which may be less cumbersome on a PC.

To play the same account from multiple platforms, you need to purchase the game for each one (applying those purchases to the same account), but will then only need to pay a single subscription for the account, regardless of how many platforms you have it on.

Yes. Collector's Edition on one platform + Standard Edition on another platform = CE bonuses wherever you're playing from.

Not very effectively. If one of you starts in Gridania and the other in Ul'dah, it's technically possible to walk from one of those cities to the other (though not to/from Limsa Lominsa, which is on an island) and share some of the sidequests where your BF is, or he share yours. The Main Scenario Quests, however, will be different for each of you for the first 15 levels if you start in different cities, and those are the ones you need to advance to unlock the rest of the game.

Play through your own section in your starting city for 15 levels. After the Main Scenario reaches the "The Gridanian/Lominsan/Ul'dahn Envoy" quest, you'll unlock airships and ferries to travel between the three cities, and thereafter the Main Scenario Quests are merged into a single storyline that's the same for everyone regardless where they started, so that's the natural point at which to meet up with each other and start questing together.

Or, if you really want to play together from the start, choose starting classes that are in the same city. After level 10, you can change classes anyway, so if your starting class isn't the one you want to focus on as a main class, you can add another class once you reach the city where that class's guild is located.

Personally, I'd think probably archer, but if you're considering both, I'd recommend trying both and seeing which you enjoy best. (Particularly if you choose Thaumaturge, you're going to want to level Archer some as well, because Thaumaturge level 30 and Archer level 15 are both required to unlock the Black Mage job.)

That's fine. It's how most people choose it. The slight differences in stats between races are too trivially small for anyone to be very concerned with them. (Actually, I'm fairly sure that the reason those stat differences are so small is to allow players to choose based just on looks.)
