First thing(s) to do when you finally hit 50??

I am so close I can taste it!! Currently sitting at 45 and I can finally count to 50 on one hand!

This will be my first 50.. I already picked up 2 out of the 3 of the Beast Tribe quests and I think I can pick up the last one soon if not now. I am keeping up with my main story quest line.

How many quests after 50 are there for the main story?
What other things can you only do at 50 that I should start doing right away??

Start on your relic, continue on the main story, and unlock new stuff where you can http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Guide:Progression_and_Level_Locked_Content

If you hit 50 and finish the story at the same time there are a ton of things to do. Just hitting 50 without finishing the story will limit some of the options. Hildebrand is a fun side story that unlocks after completing the main story. Others will have more accurate suggestions as I play a little differently than most. Congrats on your progress!

The first things you should do on hitting fifty are to finish your class/job quests (You're rewarded with an i55 chestpiece and your final skills, which you'll be expected to have), and to finish the 2.0 storyline by completing the quest The Ultimate Weapon/the dungeon The Praetorium. The latter is important because literally like 95% of level 50 content will not even appear for you until you have cleared Praetorium!

After that, you'll be slapped in the face with a billion level 50 quests suddenly available - dungeon unlocks, content unlocks, trials, 2.1(+) storyline, and more. To which end I'm going to just link an older post by myself on the subject. You can definitely take your time, though, and don't need to feel pressured. Explore content; since you're new, every piece of content you enter will have a new player soldiery bonus on first completion. Those + loot drops + getting your relic weapon will help you raise your iLvl steadily.

Above all, the major quest lines you'd want to progress:
    * A Relic Reborn; this questline is fairly fun and easy, gets you a good introduction to level 50 content, and eventually drops an i80 weapon in your lap. Which is super quick to upgrade to i90, and if you're willing to undertake some tasks of varying lengths can be continually upgraded into what is currently the strongest weapon in the game.
    * Hildibrand's questline, in Ul'dah, is a lot of fun. While there's no upgrades to be had from it, there's a lot of cosmetic upgrades (minions, emotes, etc.), it's a great laugh, and also has three really fun trial battles in it.
    * The postgame storyline. It does in fact continue! There are five trials and two dungeons locked behind progressing the postgame storyline. You may be locked off at some points due to not having gotten enough gear from other content, but consider those good times to take a break, and the postgame story requisites like goals!
    * The Crystal Tower series of quests. This quest begins with Legacy of Allag in Revenant's Toll. It is slow to start (eww waiting on a couple FATEs you'll likely have to solo, don't be afraid to call for help). However, afterwards, you get access to the 24-man Crystal Tower raids, based on the final dungeons of Final Fantasy III. Though '24 man raid' probably sounds horrifying, it's very forgiving and fairly easy, and these raids give you some of the highest tomestones per completion and also drop really good gear upgrades for you. If you wanted to quickly raise your iLvl, this place is the best; and it's still well worth the effort to visit.

I need help....! I reached level 50 but I missed some of the story line and I suck in the dungeon...I don't have the right equipment ... because I just joined a company and didn't get all the great weapons and armor for a tank. Do you know if I can power up quickly or find some decent armor and a weapon, also I just got a chocobo at level 50....bummer...this sucks,

You have seriously overlevelled young man. That said, GC gear is more of a boon than a necessity.

That said gear is absolutely easy to come by. When you go back to progress things you'll find gear just falling into your lap from main quests and sidequests; especially don't forget to do your class and job quests.

Thank you for your reply... I'm not sure what part of the storyline I missed.... so do you think I should start over or just go back and see if I did all the levequest?

Do you have an FC, or at least LS, that is new player friendly?

Before anything else, I'm going to recommend you find one... it's a lot easier for people to help you in game than on the forums, especially where they can chat with you and see particulars of your situation.

All that said I wouldn't start over. To start with, look for the quest with the meteor-looking icon. Do those (these aren't levequests). As another poster mentioned, there's tons of ways to get gear. Catch up on main story and then there first couple dungeons when you hit 50 have drops as well. You'll start collecting tomestones, which can be used to purchase gear in Revenant's Toll. From there, see that guide I've posted; you've got a lot of options and that outlines them.
