I thought gilg was one of the more populated servers? Perhaps everyone is preoccupied with gold saucer atm?
I switched from Lamia to Balmung. First thing I noticed was it was PACKED. And during the slow hours, there are still Party Finders up. It's pretty much alive at all hours. Things sell in the markets pretty quickly. I personally think it was worth it.
If you like hitting people, there are so many that you will never run out of victims. Kosme prefers using wine bottles.

If people would stay away from legacy servers there would be plenty of players spread around. Keeping legacy server I think is one of the worst mistakes they made.
That's probably a big reason for it at the moment.
Whether or not the legacy tag is present won't change the way the communities interact with each other in terms of which servers contain more of X or less of Y. Also, ALL 1.0 character data was imported to those servers so that they wouldn't have to restart from scratch and lose out on progress/achievements that were already obtained.

Who is this other Sid?
*if* you can come to balmung it's packed. Which is why it's locked 99% of the time.
Balmung community is very good. even the elitists on this server are kind enough to help the commoners.
Should be noted that Balmung has the bulk of FFXIV's Roleplaying community, so you will see roleplayers doing events around towns and whatnot. The server's pretty cool with it, actually with minimal amount of trolls. It's kinda a phenomenon in FFXIV.
This means Blamung isn't going to be dropping heavily in population any time soon. Character alts and tight knit-communities that are invested in world building are abounds there, so roleplayers and the friends that stick with them are likely not going to want to leave the server even if they open free transfers off.
