GLA cannot roll need (low level)?

I just leveled my gladiator up to Sastasha and have run it twice now. Both times green level items specifically for "GLA... etc" have dropped and I couldn't need (a chest, a shield and legs). It says I don't fit the requirements for the item. Luckily I greed won the shield and was able to use it, but is this a known bug or am I missing something?

The and cnj can also use shields, and they aren't exactly the same as a gld/pld shield. Some body pieces are also drg pieces, although I think you should still be able to roll need on those

Gladiator/Paladin can't, but Lancer/Dragoon can. Figure that one out. o.O

You can roll need on equipment that is *only* for the tanks. If it is available to other classes, they get preference though. Those pieces of equipment were really made for them and have lower stats than the tank specific equipment, but it wouldn't make sense if the tanks couldn't equip it - just like you *could* wear cloth armor on your tank .. it just isn't suggested.

Tanks can wear general Disciple of War stuff and also some stuff that's Lancer/Dragoon too. If you compare the DoW and LNC stats you'll see the armor has lower defense on it.

I've noted already so far in my short (FFIX wise) tanking career, that low level gear isn't tanky anyway. At 25, your first set of real tank gear shows up to acquire, which lasts till 35. Up till then, it's a chain mail free for all, shields and such all inclusive.

Still, not being able to need roll on low level tank gear seems a bit off to moi.

Unless it has parry, it usually wont be a GLA/PLD exclusive at that lvl

This originates from weirdness in armor types where "mail" is typically allowed on tanks and lancer/dragoons. Plus some dungeons not dropping "symmetric" gear sets - not every class gets a named drop from every dungeon. But is basically sorts out like this:
Lancer gear had/has higher defense values than the other DoW gear and it's restricted from monks and bards. It often has lower Mdef than Pdef.
Tank gear has the highest defense and the Pdef and Mdef match.

Does this make sense now? You can't roll need because it's not technically tank gear.

For example. The Plundered Haubergeon is Listed as "GLA MRD LNC PLD WAR DRG". The Cuirass is "GLA MRD PLD WAR". The Cuirass has like 2x the defense on it.
Lancers get to need on the Haubergeon, Tanks get to need on the Cuirass.
The other two Disciple of War drops are the Monk/Nin and Bard. They each get to need on their specific pieces only too.

Much of the lancer gear in dungeons is like this in some way. Other examples:
Kokoroon's Darkshell Mail (LNC/GLD/MRD) is TANK need only. It has matching Pdef and Mdef on it.
The Hoplite Tabard (Tank) vs. Hetairos Mail (Lancer+tank, lancer needs) vs. Peltast Acton (DoW).
There's also the Vermilion Haub (tank) vs. Alpine War Jacket (tank+lancer, lancer needs) vs Sipahi

For some GLA/MRD/LNC gear, the gear is intended for lancers and dragoons. For others, they're intended for tanks and lancers/dragoons are kindly allowed to wear it. Check the Mdef. If it's lower than Def, it's lancer/dragoon gear. If they're the same, it's tank gear (mainly applies to the level 23, 32, 38 and 46 scale mails).

With shields, some shields are gld/cnj/thm, or gld/thm. Check the stats on the shield. If they're str/parry-related, they're gladiator/paladin shields. If it's int/mind-related, it's for them magic users.


Related to the first, it annoyed me so badly back when I was still trying to get my Infantry set completed from Brayflox normal, when the tanks would just not roll on the pink scale mail pieces, despite wearing level 20-25 gear (or worse, DoW gear). Their excuse? "It's not tank gear D:" or "I have gear of that level already" (DoW gear). I headdesked so many times.
