How come I ran through that item box without actually getting an item?

Happened few times in chocobo racing, I KNOW the box still had items left inside, but made collision and didn't get anything. Is this a hit box issue or some sort of mechanic I'm just unaware of?

I've had this happen to me several times. I'd literally run through the box, unopened and boom a "miss".
And yes, I was in the correct lane well in advance. =\
