I have to admit to being surprised it's not been locked at least...Unfortunately though, he/she is completely ignoring the statement and how it ties into the crafting/merchant/reward system of this game:
Completely glossing over the point that the remaining flesh is indeed used for other purposes...and goes on to tie it all into the real world practice. When your entire premise is based on incongruent facts/details, your cause falls apart.
Regardless, the OP and so much of this thread is in violation of forum guidelines... hopefully the moderators will step in and deal with it soon enough.
Oh, I like the trolls. At first I replied with snarky, humorous(in my mind) comments. But he's wrung all humor out of this now with his subsequent responses. I'm actually starting to worry he might be serious. Please don't make me lose what little of my faith in humanity remains!
.
It's a game, if everything in the game that has a potentially negative analogue in the real world were removed, we would have a very different game.Shark Fin Soup as a positive: it is a meal that players can make and consume in the game, that's why it's framed as positive. It's framed as normal. Something the good guys consume regularly.
Pugil Fin Soup: Pugils are FF monsters, they aren't real and are not tied to a destructive real world industry.
My question to you is this: Why do you feel like Shark Fin Soup is fine for us to produce and consume in the game?
Megalodon is not tied to a destructive real world industry, it died out around 2 million years ago(Edit: thanks to tired eyes, I failed to spot the decimal point, it's 2 (two) million, not 20 million as I originally commented), and as such is not tied to anything in the world except the study of fossils and long extinct creatures of pre-history.
Why do you assume anything regarding how I feel about Shark Fin Soup? I have no problem with an in-game items because I can separate pretend from real. As a society we do not filter our entertainment based on what the most vulnerable individuals perceive as real or pretend. If we were to do so, there's not a lot in the worlds of literature, TV, Movie or video game that would survive intact.
That is the heart of the issue here, and also why I believe that the OP is not sincere in his post. You have to deliberately read an agenda into the color text of the Shark Fin Soup that is in the game in order to take offense. Not to mention the fact that in some parts of the world Shark Fin Soup is a delicacy, and not seen in a negative light.
Personally I'll have no part of anything related to Shark Fin Soup in reality. But that has nothing, and I mean nothing, to do with a craft item in a video game.
I'd just like to add that I will not reply in this topic any more. I'm annoyed with myself for feeding this insanity, I should have withdrawn earlier.

You mean the species that went extinct without the help of man?
Irony - the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning:
the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.
But I like how you choose to prove your ignorance further by ignoring the rest of the post and trying instead to condescend to me from atop your imaginary high-horse.
That's true, so why not call it Megalodon soup? It cuts the tie to the real world dish, and instead serves as a parody of it.
I did not mean to imply that you're okay with the real world dish, I was referring specifically to it as an item in the game, which based on your response it seemed like you at the very least did not have a problem with. Sorry for the confusion! Why do you assume anything regarding how I feel about Shark Fin Soup? I have no problem with an in-game items because I can separate pretend from real. I am basing my response on the name of the item. That is the heart of the issue here, and also why I believe that the OP is not sincere in his post. Tiger penis is also a delicacy in China, that does not make it okay to hunt tigers and kill them for their pelts and penis'.
I can completely understand your point of view! I give fantasy and fiction a pass on things that I don't agree with as well. I play FFXIV regularly, I love this game, I just don't like that it frames shark fin soup as a good thing. It won't stop me from playing FFXIV, but I also don't think it's a lot to ask that it be changed.
There was nothing condescending about my reply. You just brought up something ironic that I missed. Giving me the definition of Irony however is very condescending however. You mean the species that went extinct without the help of man?

Here is the part of the definition you missed in your copy and paste -
"a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result."
So yes, SE including an extinct fish in a recipe that IRL is leading to the man-made extinction of fishes is ironic. I would expect to see a non-extinct or endangered fish listed on this recipe. I'm well aware that humans didn't have anything to do with the extinction of the megalodon.

The real Megalodon shark died out 2.6 million years ago.
A bit before the time when we started making soup.
I think few people here support real finning, and it's not like we do it in game either. The real world parallel on the end product doesn't have much impact on anything.
