Question about Chocobo Breeding

So, I'm on the verge of a rank 40 chocobo, and I'm saving up to get my Chocoho (You rent a chocobo to breed with...yeah)

What I want to know is can you use a Pedigree 9 Coverage Permission thing with a Pedigree Rank 1 Chocobo for breeding purposes, or do you have to use Rank 1 with a Rank 1 and so on and so forth. I've tried looking at all the information in game, and I don't think I saw anything like this, unless my eyes are worse than I thought, lawl.

Can you not retire your first chocobo and train another to breed with your retired one? Thought you could do that as well as rent a partner. :3 I'd like to know this too though! Deffo need more in depth answers in game.

To answer your question specifically, you can breed any number grade with any other number grade, so breeding with a 9 would probably be the best idea.
