New player - Making battle quotes

I should have mentioned this sooner, but I'm fairly new to FFXIV (and MMOs in general). I started out on the trial, came to like how the game unfolded and decided to buy it on PSN for the PS4. The character creator was one of the factors in choosing this. In fact, SoulCalibur V was my last game where I really enjoyed it. Here, characters can do more than fight and look good.

Anyway, can we make battle quotes? As in, type a phrase, store it, and bring it out from the macros?

Yes.

Do you have a usb keyboard? Because otherwise it is a pain.
Open the User Macros section, pick a box, and start typing. If you just type in text it will appear in whatever your current chat channel is (usually "say"). You can set it to display in a particular chat channel by prefacing each line of text with the channel shortcut (/p, /sh, /a ...)
You pick an icon for the macro and then assign it a place on your crossbars.

I've seen some very long ascii ones.

Please, please, PLEASE don't make battle quotes for things you use often. Save it for things where you may wish to tell the party it's being used anyway (sleep, silence, raise, limit break, invincible, etc.)

Great; this is cool. But is there a way to display it as a bubble over the head (like how NPCs do it)?

no. You can emote and people can watch you be angry or happy or whatever. But there are no text bubbles like RO.

I want to see how it works before I decide to use it. If it's restricted to the chat box, then I probably won't end up using it. It's a shame; those bubbles would have been a good idea.
