Having over the minimum numbers do not increase bite rate or decreàse fish gets away message in my experience. Once you get the minimum gathering it's all rng.

I always used sand leeches.

bite rateis entirely RNG, more gathering however does reduce getting away rate, hq spinach quiche reduces this by about 25% vs no food

Seems to be so. I have 357 gathering with food and get the same messages. Maybe it should be better to get forager first - retainer needs good tool too )

Btw. I had no problems to skip forager tools for btn/min and is near lucus now (20-25 items remaining, at 2.5 hq from node avg) but my fisher still drops fish and has quest tool only (

You Need 358 for that fish. If you fully melded AF gear without the forager main Hand, you will Need both Food and FC buff (+gathering) to be able to reach that stats. I recommend just get forager main Hand, and eat +perception buff Food. I might just be lucky but i get mine after only 2 days (not always fishing) and I have another supra on my retainer too.

RNG is RNG. If you've met the requirements - Heatwave weather - then you've done all that you can to hook the fish. Just need to keep waiting for it to bite, and you might be waiting a long, long time if luck doesn't favor you.

Well no luck today either Didn't catch any eels but lost them this go around....I don't know man, I'm hanging in there but barely lol

RNG is RNG, it took my main like 10 heatwaves to catch 3 of these while on my alt I had 2 Olgio on the first heatwave and 3rd one within 3 casts on the 2nd heatwave.

As long you don't get the skill is too low message, you can only pray that it doesn't run away. Then you have to deal with this crap again fishing Gigant Clams where half of them are going to get away (sometimes with your heavy steel rig) even with supra and max melded forager gear + i70 accessories.
