Companions - are they supposed to help

I just did the rank 22 main storyline quest for Limsa where you have to escort the poddlngs around and their are imperial guards scattered around the area. My companion follows me around (more like tries to run away from me) but does nothing for me when I engage an enemy, she draws here sceptor but usuall just keeps trying to run off. I push 'call' and she'll come to me, but doesn't do anything while I'm fighting the enemy. And ideas what's gong on?

Well in this particular mission you are supposed to not attack the enemies, you avoid them and try not to be seen. If you kill one or hit one too hard you fail the mission if i recall.

Most of the missions right now they do not help unfortunately but I hope they will expand on that later on and even let us call them in open-field.

Maybe that's it. You have to trek from an atheryte up to location, pick up podling and trek back. I went around and killed all the bad dudes before picking up the poddling so I didn't fail that way and there wouldn't be any to dodge around after picking it up. Maybe since you're not technicall supposed to fight them is why the companion wouldn't help.

Yes you are not supposed to fight them. There are Sylphs along the way that will temporarily blind the Imperials to let you run past them.

I think we've all learn that the hard way.

Also, keep in mind for situations where you do need to fight, you have to engage first before the companion actually does anything for you.
