Its why I've only taken one to i100 and will never take one further. The other weapons you can get might not be bis but they aren't going to hinder performance.

That's where I stopped as well.
Basically, they handed me a checklist of the most boring, time-wasting, mundane shit imaginable and tried to pass it off as "content".
They literally said "Go back and do old shit you get absolutely nothing from doing".
Yeah, no...
I have commented on this before in other threads. Its not the grind, but the fact that #1 its boring #2 its not even worth it right now compared to getting better weapons at a faster clip
They're both killers for me.
Comparing this to WoW's legendary quest, WoW had you do things like run raids and earn valor points (tomestones), aka stuff you were going to do ANYWAY.
Between doing these, you had to do some things that were genuinely challenging and some players couldn't even do (clickers, heh...).
Tedious ≠ challenging. If the ONLY thing that separates you from your objective is TIME, then it's not HARD, it's boring.
I will not even start describing how the relic weapon quest was in FFXI then, I think it might give you a seizure.
(Jokes aside, I agree I would have liked some cutscenes and history behind the weapons myself)
Things are only challenging when you are learning it. Once you get stuff on farm it is not one bit challenging, it is all about the time. But it things were handed out without the time requirements then people would complain that it is not special. So you earn it by being the most persistent thru stuff that you find boring, or you make it a challenge to turn the grind into something interesting for you.
Tell that to people who know a fight, have cleared it, and can yet still screw up.
The level of challenge in in a HM primal fight vs. the level of challenge from running fates aren't even in the same universe.

Watching a video does not equal knowing. Clearing once does not equal mastering it. When people can do it in their sleep is when they stop screwing up. Basically it has to get to the point where is automatic. And then the only reason for screwing up is being distracted/loss of concentration, or literally sleeping.
Have you see Garuda HM lately? It is no different from running fates, they all just burn Garuda with AOE spams and ignore everything else.

But the relic quests a grindy as heck because there are select group of players that like stuff like that. SE is throwing them a bone, and in the process they get to assist other players with old content.
I stuck to my guns with the Relic Quest for my Black Mage Zeta. I actually took my time with it and have been working on my weapon on and off since Atma was first introduced last year. It really wasn't until a month ago that I started the grind up again and for the past 4 weeks I did nothing at all in game but grind for Lights/Zodiac drops/Company Seals, Gil, Soldiery Tomestones and more Lights until my fingers began to bleed and I lost lots of sleep.
As much as I complained to some people about having to run Dungeons upwards of 20-30 times for a drop and how it was driving me nuts doing the same repetitive content over and over again. I actually enjoyed satisfaction of the finished product I slaved over. It's not BiS compared to a Dreadwyrm probably but it's still the best weapon I currently own on any of my jobs and I feel like I accomplished something.
You make a pertinant observation. However, please consider;I stuck to my guns with the Relic Quest for my Black Mage Zeta. I propose a 40-hour race:
- You take ONE relic weapon from 0 - 135 (or as far as you can get in the time constraint).
- I take all my crafting classes to level 50 (or as far as I can get in the time constraint).
Who do you think would get "more" for thier time? Who will have more satisfaction in thier accomplishments? Who will get the most benefit from that time investment?
More importantly - is SE asking these questions?
