Just because it was meant to be a grind and meant to be time consuming doesn't mean it isn't boring as hell or certain phases of it aren't poorly designed. Surely there is a way for the quest to be a grind and have content that can be considered fun? I mean as it stands you got a phase that requires endless fate farming / soldiery farming then after you get done with those farms you gotta farm gil and spiritbond farm. The books require teleporting around everywhere and running all over the world just to camp out in spots and wait for fates or kill 2 guys, wait for their respawn, kill 2 again and wait and kill 2 again... wait wait wait wait wait wait. No one likes to just wait around like that.
Also as it stands it's literally just a grind for glamor at this point. Shiva weapons are better unless you spend weeks and lots and lots of hours getting past the light farming. Afterwards, FCoB i130 weapons are better than any current relic progression.
Time investment needs to be more worth it IMO.

That is the question. I think the first thing that would need to be done to the process is to make it so that the reward is worth the time a player sinks into it. Right now this is not the case.
But that's the issue isn't it? Because even if the final relic stage puts it at the level of Dreadwyrm weapons, it probably still wouldn't be worth all the work involved to get them. And if they make them better than Dreadwyrm all hell will break lose since they'll become "mandatory" for progression.
That wouldn't solve anything, it would just turn relics into Ironworks/Dreadwyrm weapons.

Take a page from WoW's book with the legendary quests during MoP: most of the steps of the quest revolve around doing things you were going to do ANYWAY.
You did raids (which could be raid finder or higher difficulties), gathered VP (tomestones) and capped one rep and that was all for "grindy" parts.
Everything else you had to do usually involved challenging mobs or sequences that advanced the storyline.
That was the other thing: the whole questline was one long storyline. After the initial relic quest, it seems like all storyline goes out the damn window...
Bottom line, it's fully possible to make this take a LONG time, but not be a skull-crushingly boring grind.
But thats wrongFCoB i130 weapons are better than any current relic progression.
It wasn't bad IF you didn't each stage when they released. But to do one from scratch now....he'll no. Unless you are like me and just want the newest weapon skin for glamour. Yes, that whole tedious, boring, expensive grind just for a glamour.

Oh look, yet another thread of people whining about not enjoying an OPTIONAL quest.
Don't enjoy the relic grind? Don't do it. Think it's too much effort for too little reward? Don't do it. Go and grab one of the many alternative weapons you keep going on about.
I can only assume all the people complaining about the quest do, in fact, want their relic weapon. Why? What sets it apart from any of the other end game weapons EXCEPT for the grind?
"But it's too grindy!", "The grind has not been reduced to some arbitrary level that I personally feel is acceptable!".
Some people enjoy the relic quest line. Not everything has to be liked by everybody.
