I find the community to be overall enjoyable. I avoid hunts since a lot of toxicity comes out there, but I tend to find good natured players pretty much wherever I go. I enjoy playing with others, I like helping newbies and showing players the ropes. Not everyone is like this, there are some mean folks out there. After all, it's a fairly mixed population we have. There's bound to be some undesirables. But as a whole, I like who I play with, whether in premade or with randoms.

As far as lotting goes, I throw my greed roll and call it a day. Gives a chance for fresh players to grab some gear, but gives me a chance at seals if no one else wants or I win the roll. For a vanity piece, I will roll need with no qualms. Chances are a piece of glamoured gear will stick around far longer than a placeholder piece of gear used for ilvl progression. Even when I lose a roll I'm really hoping for, I curse, then queue again. After all, that player dedicated the same amount of time I did in the run, and has as much of a right to roll as me.

Okay, loot arguments aside almost entirely. I very much enjoy the community in this game. Maybe it's just a server thing (i don't spend a lot of time in DF'er), but i often see vets on my server helping out in clear parties, etc... Don't get me wrong, i'm not blind to the impatience/rudeness/trolling that i do encounter, but OP, come on. You can only control what you can control. Please realize that. It will save you a lot of unnecessary grief. On a related note, in any community, the best you can hope to do is set the example and hope people will feel obliged to pay it forward. I'll be the first to admit that i'm not a particularly generous player. I like to keep my head down and mouth shut in DF'er. I like to need on everything i can. I usually stick to my static or FC, but even I have my moments. Over the past few days i patted myself on the back for:

    - Passing the LoTA dragoon chest piece to the other dragoon in our party even though i wanted it for my glamour closet. They just asked me nicely (well in advance of fighting the boss), mentioned they'd been farming for it a long time, and lo' and behold it dropped and they finally got it. They were less geared than me, but still in soldiery. (I'll get another chance to get it)
    - Tanking for a T9 learning party for about 3-3.5 hours even though it's one of my least favorite Turns. (I have a great appreciation for learning groups made up of players who are @ roughly the same level of progression. I feel that by enabling them to learn on their own, i'm helping far more than by, say, clearing them 1 person at a time with my static).
    - re-joining an instance in progress as a tank when the other dps and tank dropped out of my Sastasha HM the instant they saw that our healer was new. (i was much more looking forward to playing dps and getting my roulette bonus and calling it a day for dungeons, but I have a special place in my heart for whitemages).
    - crafted several ilv110 accessories from 100% raw NQ materials without asking for a tip. (this is a time consuming pain in the butt. but still, learn who the crafters are on your server. Get on their good side. They're people too, i promise)

Earthshattering? no. Cry-happy-tears-worth? of course not. But enough to garner some coms and a few smiley emoticons.

Now, I'd be willing to bet my last gil that just about every poster in this thread who disagrees with you, and who you have insulted quite openly, has done things like what I've mentioned above. If you don't think those things are considerate, generous, etc... I don't know what to tell you.

TL;DR: be the change you want to see, and realize people have good days and bad days. You can only control what you can control. Getting upset and trashing the community because your friend's gearing process was not expedited by DF'er randoms will only get you flamed. (obviously) And it certainly won't speed up their gearing process.

Thank you for those who actually input on the other information other than just seeing loot and going "*Blahblah* loot! *blahblah*"

People also seem to believe that just because I'm a level 50 crafter, I can whip up anything. I can't, I'm not a good crafter, it's mostly there for glamour crafting, furniture and melding, not to mention it's not exactly an enjoyable task. Second, not every server's market is the same. What you may consider cheap could be quite a bit more pricey elsewhere. Third, as I said she wanted it in preparation for her next relic quests which were hot on the tail of her first, she doesn't want to be grinding higher content where more people are looking to gear up to get a temporary fix while she earns her relics.
Ok, on the note of people not owning up to mistakes so what? Stuff happens, if you tell the person what they're doing wrong and they fix it even without a reply than there shouldn't be an issue anymore right? Or do you need gratification from the person being "Oh gosh, you're right, shame on me, I'm so sorry, please forgive me." Even if the person doesn't want to admit it, if they still correct there actions afterwords than that means they took note of what you or any other person might have pointed out in that situation. If they don't and it keeps causing problems than there is the vote kick button for use.

Also guess what? I haven't touched a single crafting job yet I make gil just fine, I have plenty of geared up jobs even without having to buy MB gear. When I started FFXIV I told myself that I never want to craft cause it's not for me and I'm getting along just fine. Also I'd be surprised if on every server ilvl70-90 MB gear was super spendy still, you don't need a full set, just enough to bump you up into ilvl70. If they want they can farm high level dungeons and get some darklight gear, or heck even go do some pvp and get some wolf marks for ilvl70-90 gear.

She's going to need to farm higher level content regardless if she wants to progress, why not start early?

Oh yeah and just because you've been an "mmo gamer" for 10 years doesn't mean jack.

I worked for that kill so I'm entitled to roll for any loot, as is anybody. If I want to trade it for seals then thats my choice. Maybe some player do need an upgrade, but then who are you to say I don't deserve to earn seals to buy bombard cores to upgrade to zodiac.

People are focused on loot because that was central theme of your original post; that the community, in large, were horrible, greedy monsters because some random people in a DF encounter didn't want to concede their right to lot on drops. Change the crux of your initial argument if you want, but please don't act like everyone is missing the point when they are, in fact, responding directly to your central point.

People also seem to believe that just because I'm a level 50 crafter, I can whip up anything. You're correct, it was presumptuous on my part to assume you could make 3 star and/or 4 star recipes, but no more so than you were when you made this comment:

...Second, if you've been farming that long for 1 book, you could just buy the EX book materials, it looks better anyway. People must be rich enough stealing all the gear off newer players for their precious seals and desynth.
    Lastly, there is this:

Third, as I said she wanted it in preparation for her next relic quests which were hot on the tail of her first, she doesn't want to be grinding higher content where more people are looking to gear up to get a temporary fix while she earns her relics.
Honestly, this is beginning to sound like your friend expects everyone to hand things to them on account of them being new. I can understand wanting to help new players out, I do that quite frequently on my server, as do many other people. However, there is a difference between wanting to help someone and expecting those around you to bend to your whims because of your status. New player or veteran, everyone is running that content for a reason and as such holds a right to whatever drops. Yeah, we've all been where your friend is now, and we all competed with other players for items. The only difference is that at some of those points in time there were no other options. If you don't want to have competition for drops, then either go as the job you need the gear for or seek out alternative means of gearing up.

You call the community bad and don't expect the community to take offense?? =_=

I don't know you, your crafting abilities, your social situation on your server, or your friend's situation, but you've now got 13 pages of folks telling you that you are approaching this with the wrong attitude. Join a helpful FC; make friends; see who all DOES play during your play time. If someone wants/needs a specific piece of gear, plan ahead. Use the Party Finder or ask your FC for help with this. That's what these in-game features are FOR. Ask for help with crafting an item if you can't make it. The DF is just to get you into a dungeon and everyone is there for a reason and has every "right" to get some rewards for their time and effort; don't expect it to be anything else.

They chose not to respond to my simple request, they rolled on it and still said nothing so I'm I supposed to be happy for them or something?

As you stated, they believe they have no attachments and can do whatever they want so why do you care so much if I call them out on it? Why defend them so when they clearly decided to act like that? So basically if they do it with malicious intent it's their right and if they don't say anything and do it it's also their right and I shouldn't get mad or angry about it all? Nor should I criticize them is that what you are telling me?

Loot aside, I also disagree with the assertion that the community is bad enough to ruin the game. Admittedly I've come across some bad apples, but the amount of friendly and helpful people I've met outnumbers them.

This is just another random item for the list of "things that will kill *insert name of game here*" there's not a single online game, mmo/fps/rpg/mymom, that hasn't had someone in the community say this, or many other, stuff on why they game will die/how it will he killed.
