The next step would be to download an find something that is graphically demanding like an Overclocking program and see if it still crashes. Sometimes you get a bad draw on the wafer and have to send it back for a replacement. If you have a backup GPU install that and see if it still gives you the time out error. Hope some of these steps help.
Thank you.

The card was correctly installed. I have 2 backups, one in the motherboard itself (very weak, can only get about 12fps in FFXIV, but it doesn't cause the TDR crashes) and I've just started using a weak old graphics card that my mother was using in her computer (by no means ideal, she no longer has a graphics card and this one is only able to get up to about 40fps in FFXIV but it also doesn't crash).

We've tried extending the timeout delay to 18 seconds by editing the registry, we've tried different drivers, we've tried different operating systems (this 8.1 being a completely fresh new install on a new hard drive), other cards and on board graphics (although MUCH weaker) don't have these issues.

About the only thing left to try is to take the card back and either get a replacement or a different type.
