Aye I'm new... (to this MMO.)

Greetings to the FF XIV community, here and all. =^^=

I'm a noob to this game, though not so to MMOs and especially to the FF series. I already get what the direction of this game is about, given I tanked as a WoW pally back in Cata, and that's been my M.O. in various similar style games of any flavor. Jedi tanking, Aion tanking, not so much in GW 2, Paragons in GW really not so, but ye all get the inevitable idea of where my standard talent lies in MMOing, and my initial direction here, for FF XIV.

And I get the idea of what low level taking in a dungeon will be like already. Bleh.

Anywho, that's my deal, so far enjoying the game, if not all the spam, (but whateves,) and will appreciate anything whatsoever that can help a newb-noob-nub in getting the most out of this game. I'm already a 90 day sub, to be certain there, and look forward to conversing with y'all. So, meats and greets. =^^=

First query then, since paladin will be my initial Job goal, how do I get around to the other main cities, to obtain the other necessary jobs? I'd like, after what I have been reading, to obtain other classes before I attempt my first dungeon experience, for their skills. I know I have to get GLA to 30 anyway, but wouldn't mind getting the other classes going, presuming I am not forced to wait, of note.

And when do I get my Chobo companion?

Do the Main Scenario Quests, it will unlock access to other cities prior to the first dungeon. After joining a Grand Company via a the MSQ, you will be able to purchase a chocobo license with Grand Company seals from them. You can obtain those by doing FATES once you are a member of a Grand Company or by doing the GC hunt log you will receive on joining. Around level 30 there is a quest at Camp Tranquil in the Black Shroud where you can learn to summon your chocobo to fight with you. Most things in the game are unlocked or triggered via the MSQ or class/job quests, so it is a good idea to keep up to date with them.

Welcome to the game. Good tanks are always in demand so you picked the perfect job to hit the ground running. You get access to airship travel at level 15, by completing the main scenario quest The Ul'dahn Envoy. it will take you to other city states to attune to Atheryte Crystals. These crystals once attuned can be used to teleport at any time for a small amount of gil.

Naria covered it. While in a lot of MMORPGs the "main storyline" is honestly fairly negligible, in XIV a huge amount of content is locked behind progressing it (There's maybe one or two pieces of level 50 content you can do without completing the main story first, for instance; and a lot of systems - mounts, chocobo companions, duty finder, grand companies, and more - are locked behind certain main story quests as well). I'd say to make sure to proceed your Job quests as well - but given you already are looking towards Paladin, you're sure aware of that already too!

So basically, I go about beating stuff up on my GLA for another level before I see new stuff to access, and that I need a grand company for about anything else at all.

I 'am' after a good 'guild', or whatever the exact equivalency is here, and am somewhat picky after enough MMOs worth of guilds, fleets and such, nevermind one that is for 'this' game, and not others for the 'fun' of it, and all distracting such I don't need for myself. The question there then is where to go to choose properly, and is it all cross server, or only those on the one I am on.

Eventually I'll get a hold of this, with enough bashes to the skull here. =xX=;;;

The Main Scenario and the other quests should provide you with more than enough exp to get to 15. When I leveled up my alt character he was around 17 when he got an airship pass, even though the quest is 15. If you are having to grind out mobs, then you might have missed a quest some where. What is the last Main Scenario quest you completed in your journal?
