    Watching some 1.0 Videos

Good lord how was this ever passed?

Areas are huge and empty to a ridiculous degree. It kind of reminds me of a Fallout game to be honest, but that game was meant to be big and empty and even then it had more stuff.

Combat. Why is every character moving like they have no motivation? People always defend the sluggish combat by saying its realistic. I dont see realism. The Elder Scrolls had better combat than that. Remember how Sonic 06 had that slowdown issue where the game itself would go in slow-mo? Thats how I see 1.0 combat.

Dungeons. 1.0 Toto Rak. Designed by Satan. Enough said.

Visuals. Though they had more textures and whatnot, everything had this really weird murky or over saturated look. I cant quite put my finger on it. I vastly prefer ARR's visuals.

Cutscenes. I will admit, 1.0 had some pretty cool ones.

Animation. Other than the combat animations, I did like how characters turn and leaned when they ran. Just a nice little detail.

It was the lighting, 1.0 had terrible lighting.

I also really wish they'd bring back the individual combat stances for different races.

The graphics actually were better, the lighting wasn't.

Yoshi-P had a really interesting presentation at the 2014 Game Developer's Conference on why 1.0 failed and how they fixed it in 2.0. I'm not sure if it was this presentation, but I do recall him mentioning issues with 1.0 such as empty game zones and bad map designs, as well as how they actually lowered the graphical quality to make the game more playable and to enable more than 20 characters to be shown at once.

If technology and bandwidth increases by 100% ~ 200% in the next 11 or so years. I'm almost willing to assume the next online successor may be on par to handle what Oda had in mind with 1.0 and its initial visual design. However, given everything I've read and heard about 1.0. It's almost like the world concepts of Dragons Dogma, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, etc.. but applied to a larger MMO instead of a single player or 2 player co-op. Hearing how ESO doesn't look as good as Skyrim (possibly due to the MMO limits on/of clients) or play as well. Everything Yoshi did makes a lot more sense. Even Phantasy Star Online looked pretty, but that was mostly due to how it's world was server/hub and everything else was not that big. Perhaps one day we could crank up the graphics after or if they migrate to the PS5. Untill then I'm still trying to decide if the Primals looked better in 1.0 or 2.0.

I honestly dont see it. The only thing that pops out are the textures on the hempen tops. If there are any difference, they're incredibly minor.

There are TONS of major differences in pretty much every mesh and texture in the game. You'd really have to either see it rendered in front of you (instead of in a youtube video with its crappy compression) or see some really high-quality, high-resolution, low-compression pics.

Ultimately, it was the lighting engine that makes it look so odd, especially in the videos, and especially in night-time scenes.
