There are plenty of people that know how to get around the auto afk-kick so it doesn't really do much good anyways.

I'm with the OP in bringing back afk-kick after X amount of time afk. But not for the same reasons, I would want it back just for the sake of server stability.
Although there are ways to get around simple afk-kick, that's only for people that actually mean to remain logged in. All those people that stayed logged in while they went and did something (and that something turned into doing another something, etc), they're logged in, and not doing anything nor are they waiting for anything.
They are simply not at their computer, but still eating up server resources.
If you're waiting for a fate or something to spawn, fine, have your character auto-run into a wall. But we need to clear out all the people who leave ffxiv on (accidentally or otherwise), and leave their computer for large amounts of time. They're doing no good just standing there.

Read some of the responses. So going to go over some of the excuses:
- No afk-kick means no auto boot while waiting for fate - I call bologna on this one. I did the whole fate wait many times. I stayed at my computer the entire time, chatting with friends in FC or LS, afk only kicks in if my mouse stops moving and I literally do nothing for 30 minutes. AFK = Away From Keyboard. They aren't waiting on some fate, they are literally not even at the computer.
- AFKers are a minor contributer to server always being locked - Don't buy it. Unless SE themselves have outright said they are minor, there's no reason why Balmung should be closed 24/7. I was checking every hour on the hour last night, and not once did the server unlock.
Fact is, people afk, are not at their computers. My FC had this one person sitting in our house for literally 24 hours while they went to bed, then went to work, and apparently they always do that. That is wasting server resources. If you are not playing the game, then you should logout just like the rest of us, plain and simple. There's no waiting times to login. I get done playing, I logout, do my thing, then when ready to play again, put in my 2 passwords, click play, click start, select character, and I am in. There's no reason to afk, except to be lazy because they don't want to actually input a password.
Well that's not a really fair assumption. A person can be afk in ffxiv and still be waiting for something. Myself, I have two screens. If I'm waiting for something in ffxiv, and I want to be doing something else on the computer that isn't ffxiv while I wait, I'll just bring it up on my second screen. And afk does kick in while I'm moving my mouse around in a different window.- No afk-kick means no auto boot while waiting for fate - I call bologna on this one.
Another situation, a person is waiting for something in ffxiv, and they play on their phone while they wait.
A person can physically be at their computer, waiting for something to happen in ffxiv, but still be occupied with something other than ffxiv while they wait. For those moments, either auto-running into a wall, or simply having the afk-kick be a large enough window that someone waiting for any reasonable amount of time would still be safe.

Don't know how long you've been around but some of the animus fates have a 3 hours respawn timer. I had to wait around 2hrs30min for two of my fates on my first animus. if SE don't want us to AFK then they shouldn't added that kinda content that is locked by timers. It's not up to the player to think like "Hmm I've afkd 2 hours and the fates hasn't spawned, maybe im just wasting resources"

I wish Exodus was locked more to creating new characters, it would really cut down on the RMT tells and friend requests.

I agree, in order to alleviate some server congestion they should re-implement the afk-auto kick feature. Maybe have a 6hr limit?
