If you want FFXI, go play FFXI-0 death penalties.

..How far the pendulum swings.

I think Yoshida's been doing a great job. Now if only he'd get rid of leveling...

That's a very interesting hypothetical probability.
What if?
It almost scares me to say that it could work if thought through..
In regards to the OP: the image of a theme-park styled experience works, if that's what they were going for. For me it's no on 98% of your points.
Shades of grey. Some of these things can be considered "modern" convenience while others are to appeal to the broader audience for more subs. I would like a nice middle ground myself.
ah yes, just what i want when i play a video game; frustrating, pointlessly inconvenient bullshit.

Agreed 100%! It's just like those people who come to the forums and bitch about other people being lazy and want everything handed to them. I keep telling them that MMOs just aren't for them, but instead of leaving politely they continue to bitch.
All I know is that I'm having fun, and if I can find fun where other people can't, that just makes me a better gamer I guess.
This is why I still play ffxi once In a while also. I do still enjoy the grind on there. And I like it fun and easy(er) on here. Both are separate games, and both are fun.
Also amazing how many people still play ffxi. they still have so many players on so many servers they could easily merge half of them together if the population ever drops. Which it really hasn't much.
Anyways. Go try ffxi it sounds more suited for your taste. Not saying you can today this also. But you just seem like you'll get more enjoyment from it.
And to the guy who mentioned crafting? It's not too bad. I think it was harder on 1.x
God spelling errors, "not saying you can't today" * no edit button on my phone
