There was an official comment on the matter from Yoshi -- will have to go see if I can search up the source -- but he did mention that they wouldn't just throw away all people's work on the relic and that it will have some use in the expansion. Regardless of whether there is a whole new weapon or not, what we do know is that some 3.0 content will require the relics.
