WoW does it but with lots of problems. If all the data centres are close to each other, sure. But you are asking for a cross data centre between NA and JP data centres. That would give you a higher latency than connecting directly to those data centre. That's the problem faced by the WoW Aus data centre players.

Let's say someone playing in an NA datacentre has 90 ping. Then, he has to add an additional 300 ping to connect from the NA datacentre to the JP one. That would give a total of 390 ping. This is the same problem faced by those WoW players. The current Aus players are getting higher ping connecting to the NA data centres through the AUS data centres than they would if they connected to the NA data centres directly.

It would be worse for the EU players right now (assuming the EU data centre isn't up). They have to connect to the NA data centre and then from there connect to the JP one.
