PC issues, AMD GPU, overclocking and more, Need Help!

    Hey guys,

TLDR: I am looking for some help optimizing my pc and game

    i5-3570k cpu
    amd 7870 gpu
    16gb ram

since the new patch 2.5 went live I noticed I have had some stability issues I didn't notice as much before. First was during a behemoth fight, my computer was putting out like 4 fps and I couldn't move or do anything, then my game crashed.

I also seem to crash every once and a while in mor dhona but only at the coerthas zone, when exiting mor dhona. I read some stuff on the forums about people with AMD cards having the issue. Does anyone else experience this?

While reading on the forums someone said opening up the task manager will help fix this, and it seems to work, but why? The other day my game was about to crash so I opened up the TM and it fixed it. Sometimes it seems the longer I play the more choppy the game gets. When I first start the game up it is as smooth as butter, but as I play it gets choppier, starting the TM seems to reset the choppiness.

Today I opened the TM and noticed my cpu load was in the 90%, now I was in mor dhona and it soon dropped to about 70-75% but that still seemed really high, it was all FF too, well windows was using about 3%. So I thought that may be why some chopping. So I decided to overclock my cpu.

I can't seem to get my cpu to oc more then 4.4 ghz despite reading numerous articles saying there should be no problem getting it to 4.5, but when I increase it anymore windows suddenly won't load. Also my core voltage is about 1.34v which again is high comparing to other articles I read. Right now my Temps are about 70°C.

Any info about about studdering in certain spots or ideas about my gpu or help with overclocking would be appreciated. I am fairly knowledgeable about computers and hardware having built a few pc, but I suck at the software side and don't have much info on programming.

Find out whats causing the CPU load to be that, don't play the game, just boot up TM and find the culprit, what background tasks do you have running, try disable some of the if needed.
something is running so it needs to be turned off, also I have that CPU, I would drop that too 4.2 to be safe, 4.4 and 4.5 have very high temps and its very hungry on the volts at that point.

Also, this fixed a friends issue with crashing, check your system for dust especially on the CPU and GPU, if no background tasks are causing this, something is causing high temps to occur and creates a throttle on one of those 2.

Also download prime 95 and just youtube how to use it if you need to, and run it, and see what CPU temps you get, anything over 80 degrees on prime is a huge no no.

Also download MSI kombuster, this taxes the GPU and check the temps on that, again 80 degrees is the threshold here.

You may say you are getting 70 degrees now, but so did my friend, in game was another beast, just check the innards of your system fully.

In game load to near 100% is fine, it should be a lot lower then that if you minimise the game though into TM.

    OK thankyou,

Ran prime 95, determined 4.4 was running way too hot, almost got to 100°, so I backed it down to 4.2, prime showing 80° [much better lol]

In game I'm not going over 70° but really staying in low 60's, much better and so far have not crashed out of FF

I did check my TM but there is nothing else running save some very small processes and such from windows, but with the game off I'm at 1-3% cpu load

Also I just air dusted my pc this morning but it was pretty clean to begin with (there was a couple dust balls that came outta the back corner tho)

This has been happening at least since 2.3, maybe earlier but good thing this issue has been "resolved", at least according to SE's tech support because someone found a workaround by enabling two LOD options that make the game look worse but hey no reason to fix it if there's a not so good workaround right?

Thanks, I have read through that thread and turned cache lod data, but I don't really want low detail models on objects. It seemed like this problem is only with AMD cards?
I don't know why it's resolved when so many are still having issues, guess I'm going Nvidia next

Yeah it's pretty much only AMD users who suffer from this issue. It has been a while since I read about it but last thing I remember was people giving up on getting a fix from SE and just hoping the magical "DX11 will fix it" solution would take care of it along with world hunger and disease.

Here's basically the difference you're looking at
    Both off
Both on just at the edge of the range for the tree in the middle to use the low detail version.
Both on v2 moved the camera just enough so that it would use the normal tree.

Give MSI kombuster a try, its the prime 95 for GPUs, it could be trottling, if not it could be driver conflicts somewhere, though not running AMD to find out, try see if you can use the beta drivers from AMD if you arent already are and see if that gives any results.

This is your problem. As an earlier poster said, it's just the LOD issue giving you trouble.

It's a known issue and it only affects this family of video cards. I have a 7870 as well and experience the same problem.

Just tick the LOD options and gotta deal with me.

I was recently given a video card of that same family; I'll keep in mind to make sure those features are on.
