In my opinion, the problem with hunts is the same problem with all other content: that different content in the end all give the same rewards, gear. While FFXIV is designed to be a theme-park MMO, it isn't.
If hunts were to give something completely unrelated to gear, then only those interested in those rewards and those actually interested in the hunt would do it. All the drama about early pull and so on exist because people are not in it for the hunt, they feel they're forced to do this for the gear, so they want to get it over and done with.
Same thing with the drama about looking down on people not geared enough to do mass pull speed runs in the Roulette.
Have the reward structure diversify, and many of the social problems in FFXIV could be solved.
