What is being done about this damn RMT /tell I keep getting?

I just started fresh on a new server and hit lvl 20 in a day and during that the RMT was so regular like 7 tells per hour that it blotted out FC chat and actual tells I wanted from friends.

Blacklisting makes no difference and in extreme cases I get sent random friend invites from these people!

How do they even randomly /tell this spam anyway?

I notice all spammers are lvl 1 please just make it so you cant send a tell until lvl 10-20 or something!

I made a thread earlier on how they might better manage the RMTs, and I welcome any additional suggestions you may have.

RMTs and Bots are characters made on a server by an illegitimate third party. They are scripted computer programs to serve one of two purposes, Gil farming and Gil selling. The /tells you receive are from (usually) Lv.1 GLD located in Ul'dah. Their sole purpose is to bombard you with messages about their scammy website that will likely steal your credit card when you try to purchase in-game Gil with real-world money. Hundreds if not thousands of these fake accounts are removed from FFXIV each day, but currently the only method we have is to blacklist the player, then go to the support tab and file a report. The reason you have this problem and it's so bad ... you have that many people buying gil and supporting this type of activity sadly just look @ the market prices they've since I started playing this game back in November sky rocketed!But the gil spammers are a business type structure made to make rl money , if no money was to be made they wouldn't be wasting all their time doing what they do.

But anywho just do /busy no you won't get /tells but you won't get gil spammers either ~

A whitelist feature could help:

Allow /tell from: [√]friends [√]party [√]fc [√]linkshell(s) ... [√]my whitelist [ ]spammers [ ]anyone
...

It could be expanded as spammers start abusing other communication features ("you have been invited to the free company www.spammers.com...")

yeah black list is a major fail I have had to empty mine out... yet again.... will be filled in a month... AGAIN! Blacklist should NOT have a limit why on earth is SE encouraging spam and forcing me to not be able to do anything about it... if they want to allow this allow it! make a market board for it so the rest of us can be left alone... stop pretending like you don't want this SE and doing absolutely nothing to stop the constant harassment your players go threw and in fact making it so they cant even do anything themselves to stop it grr :@

A whitelist feature could help

I like your Whitelist idea, my only concern is that /tells are not the only spam RMTs use. We also get the Friend Requests. We'd still be getting the requests, and filling out our blacklist. It would be great to cut down on the tells, but also great if we could report the RMTs easier and get rid of that player for good. Left unblacklisted, I've had the same RMT sending me tells throughout the day for the past 3 days or so.

It could be possible to specify communication preferences for anything that is commonly abused by spammers including /tell, /flist add, /invite, fc invite, etc..

If you notice your tells, odds you are only getting a tell "ONCE" from a bot. at least once an hour at least. the "spam" is because there a lot of bots sending different tells. this has increase recently and only gets more aggravating because SE keeps banning them, so more account are created, new BL is need. RMT deleted there own character to make new1 as well.

What will happen if /TELLS are restricted?
do you think that will be the end of RMT?..no it will become worst. depending on the restriction imposed RMT will either level up to lift restriction, if filter is added to prevent tells. RMT will start using the /shout, the /Yell /S chat logs
because of the the natural restrictions of this chat logs impose. RMT bots will have no choice but to SPAM the chat log....that will be real spam. to the point that u can't read anything but RMT. since there are multiple bots competing on this chat logs.
it will become a more annoying issue unless SE monitors the chat log 24/7 in all worlds and instantly ban any spam bot....all you will see is spam....

conclusion: there is no simple solution to this....RMT bots will exist forever.

At launch there was a huge amout of rmt spam in /shout and /yell - your chat log would actually fill up with it in the load screen! - but that seems to have been largely eliminated, possibly due to measures taken to fight it.

Shout and tell spam is also extremely visible, so it is more likely to cause an immediate backlash of a bunch of people immediately blacklisting the spammer.

Thing is it's not just the /tell that is a problem they also send out friend requests.
