Crafting and gathering self sufficient??

They are but... I think it's a bit impossible to try and gather all the rare mats yourself, especially for furniture and some vanity gear. You're gonna have to rely on the MB unless you plan on spending a lot of time farming content for a chance to see it drop. Everything else though (especially leveling or combat gear) yes, you can make yourself.

Yes, if you rely on getting all the rare drops yourself, it'll give you another reason to hate RNG. So yeah, it can be done, but most players will reach their frustration limit at some point if they want to do a lot of high-level crafting (and that's where the non-crafters who get rare mat drops can make a lot of money off of them).
