PS3 Fat Refurbished vs Recertifed ; What did Sony really do for me?

My FFXIV PS3 Box: Since that is the only thing I use it for and would like to know

I just sent in my launch model ps3 60gb to Sony for repairs. This is the 2nd time since I bought mine back when ps3 was first launched. First time was loud fan noise and this time the system booted with video post. Sony said it had to be repaired and charged me 140 bucks to repair it.

Today I call up because the e ticket says that my baby is on its way back to me and that was a fast turn around. Less than a week overall. Sony rep says they are sending me a recertified model instead of fixing mine.

I've heard of refurbished before but what is recertified?

I am also curious if they check thermal paste and make sure its properly applied to the replacement model. I have had to do that once on ps3 and it is no joy to do. PC on other had is relavtively easier to do by a long shot.

    So my questions are:

Did they really check everything out before sending me that replacement model?

What is the difference between Refurbished by Sony and Recertified by Sony?

Do they really test each voltage point with a probe and make sure that thermal paste is really on right?

Do they stress test the system or just see that it boots and call that good?

Why was I told they had to fix mine and then they turn around and send me a different one instead? I was told replacement weren't available.

I did find a gamespot article that a similar set of questions someone else was asking but did not see my specific questions answered.

If anyone else has had experience with sony and ps3 replacements that would be a big help too me as well.

What does this have to do with Final Fantasy XIV? Take this question to some Playstation forums.

Anything I would offer as advice or input would be pure speculation...

but you say they "sent you a recertified model instead of fixing yours?"

They haven't made backwards compatible PS3's in a very long time. I can't imagine you are going to be happy if you enjoy that feature of the launch models, because that sounds like they are giving you a newer model.

It has happened to me before returning products to Sony. I had one of the initial launch PSP's, and within the 1yr manufacturer warranty it stopped reading games. It was one of the thicker PSP's. I contacted Sony, they sent me a prepaid package to ship my PSP in. About a week after I sent it, I received my package back, with a newer model PSP (a slimmer one). It looked like it had never been touched before, and it absolutely wasn't the same one I sent in.

This was actually a good situation for myself, but I would be pretty upset if I sent a fatboy PS3 into Sony for "fixing" and it gets replaced with a slim. Less USB ports, no BC...

Hopefully whatever happens works out for you in the end, but I am also curious about this "refurbished" vs. "recertified" comparison.

@2, this will be locked as soon as a mod sees this because this is not XIV-related.

For OP, it means they are sending you a new one that has been sent back to the manufacturer for one reason or another, like it may have been dirty and the retailer sent it back. It is very likely what you are getting is not a phat, so you are probably not going to be happy about it.

When a product wears a "factory recertified" label, it indicates a previously-purchased item returned to the manufacturer. The factory inspects it and if needed, repairs the item before reselling, usually at a significant discount.

I cant say how in-depth their inspection goes, but I'd document everything when you get it and contact them about it should anything go wrong.

Added: This very much could be relevant to FFXIV in the fact the op probably uses that ps3 for playing this. Relax people. It's not the end of the world.

why is there no PS4 option? You can make a PC for under $400 with double the specs of a PS4 and xboxcrap combined.

I do in fact use it to play FFXIV. I was also looking or reaching out to find other players that may have had similar experiences with Sony. I just ignore the comments that are off topic so they don't really bother me much. I do however appreciate the rest of you for offering your advice and opinions. I hope for the best and wish it to be my old fat boy. We'll see.

My wife sent her backwards compatible PS3 in for repairs 2 years ago, not only did Sony rebuff the chrome on it, but they even fixed the scratches.
I never heard of sony offering to send a different PS3.
