    Crafting

I am wondering about those shops that sell items that seem to be ingredients or materia for making gear or items. Is that part of crafting? And if so, how early on will I learn how to do this? Or am I just slow and am supposed to know already? lol (level 12)

Yes some of those ingredients are invovled in crafting items. Is their any craft you have a particular interest in? I can point you in the right direction to that guild.

If you've done the level 10 quest from the Conjurer's guild (or for other players' reference, the guild for whichever class you started with), that unlocks the ability to add additional classes as well. To add additional classes, you go to the guild for the class you want to add, and take a quest from the guild's receptionist to unlock that class. This pattern is the same whether it's another combat class or a crafting or gathering class. Once you've unlocked multiple classes, you switch between them just by equipping the corresponding type of weapon or tool. (So when you have a conjurer's wand equipped, you're a conjurer, and when you have a saw equipped, you're a carpenter, etc.) Each class has its own level, so you'll begin each new class you add as level 1.

As for where the class guilds are, for adding new classes:
Gridania has guilds for: Conjurer (DoM), Lancer (DoW), Archer (DoW), Carpenter (DoH), Leatherworker (DoH), Botanist (DoL).
Ul'dah has guilds for: Thaumaturge (DoM), Gladiator (DoW), Pugilist (DoW), Goldsmith (DoH), Weaver (DoH), Alchemist (DoH), Miner (DoL).
Limsa Lominsa has guilds for: Marauder (DoW), Arcanist (DoM), Rogue (DoW), Blacksmith (DoH), Armourer (DoH), Culinarian (DoH), Fisherman (DoL).

(Oh, if you haven't picked up on the game's acronyms yet:
DoM = Disciple of Magic = magic combat class
DoW = Disciple of War = physical combat class
DoH = Disciple of the Hand = crafting class
DoL = Disciple of the Land = gathering class.)

Limsa Lominsa is on an island which you cannot reach until you complete the level 15 main storyline quest that unlocks airship travel to the other cities, so you'll have to wait a little before adding the classes based there. Ul'dah you could walk to by heading south and then east through Central Shroud -> South Shroud -> Eastern Thanalan -> Central Thanalan -> Ul'dah, but it's a long way and you'd be passing by monsters higher level than you, so it's easier to wait until you get airship travel before going there either. So if you want to try out crafting, gathering, or other combat classes now, then start with the ones there in Gridania. (You can still add the others later. There's no limitation on how many classes you want to advance.)

Once you add a crafting class (if you do - they're optional and not everyone gets into crafting) a starting quest from the Guildmaster there (and one of those pop-up tutorial windows) will explain the basics of crafting. As with the battle classes, it starts out pretty simple, getting more involved as you go up in levels and gain additional skills.

Thank you all so much for the great advice! I am a conjurer, so I am guessing I will need goldsmith, weaver and alchemist? I plan on getting to ul'dah as soon as I reach level 15. I am currently on 14. Its my mission today haha

Yes the mage gear is mostly made from a Weaver. Also Carpenter is a good idea as the weapons you need (as a CNJ / WHM ) are mostly crafted from wood and they need to have Alchemist ingredients with the wood to make the weapon. A lot of the crafting builds on itself as there are important cross class skills from all of the different types of crafters. Also since a lot of your weapons come from wood it would be a good idea to start working on your botanist too. As for Goldsmith that will come in handy for accessories but most of the materials you need for those accessories are mined to get the ores needed to make them and there are gemstones that are needed (first healer related gemstone is Malachite).

You might want to look at leatherworking too as some of the weaver recipies will require certain leathers which can be made from the skin and hide drops you get.

Botanist would support Carpenter and Weaver. (Actually, Weaver alternates. In some tiers its primary resources come from botanist and through other tiers they come from combat drops.)

    Miner would support your Goldsmith.

Alchemist is a bit hard to tell. It doesn't really have a primary resource exactly, but more an assortment of miscellaneous items, some coming from each of the gathering classes and some as combat drops. (Most of the other crafting classes need an assortment of miscellaneous items in addition to their primary resource type.)

And yes, Weaver and Leatherworker go well together due to their intermediate resources. Weavers use some leather in quite a few of their recipes and Leatherworkers use cloth in some of theirs. (The basic pattern in most crafting is that raw resources collected by gathering classes or combat drops are first crafted into intermediate resources and then those are made into finished items. So a Leatherworker will use hides to make leather, then use that leather to make equipment. A carpenter will use logs to make lumber, then use lumber to make their items, etc. But some of those intermediate resources cross over, like a Weaver needing both cloth and leather to make many of their items.)

Due to all the overlap between skills, you'll want all the gatherers and crafters, with the possible exception of fisher, if you get into.crafting.
