People with level 1 character names.

Not sure where I should ask this but will there ever be a purge of level ONE characters that have been holding a name for so long? Inb4 "You snooze you lose"
but my main problem is there are level 1 characters that absolutely have one thing done and just holding it for the sake of. Never touched the character after taking the name.

Another similar note: Not fair that you got people who has not even logged since Phase 4 and holds a name since then. :/ Inactivity name purge?

Honestly I think it only matters if you want a pop culture/reference name... pick a few from here and I doubt you'll find them taken.

I've never run into this problem, then again I tend to use names from random name generators and obscure books. Most of the people that ask for this seem to want a name from something popular, or a name that is a witty saying/phrase rather than an actual name. Just come up with your own names, it's better all around. ^^

Isn't Gilgamesh known for being one of the unofficial RP servers? The level 1 character could be for that. *shrugs*

The surnames are one of the reasons I love this game. If you want a classic name, you can have one! Just got to be creative with what kind of last name fits your character. Surnames were a slice of heaven after playing mmo's like WoW where literally every name under the sun was taken. Like others above have said, I think taken names are only an issue when dealing with canon characters or celebrity names.

This will never happen simply because by any odd chance that said lvl 1 player comes back 6 months later he should be able to rely on SE that his character + name hasnt been removed.

Surnames fix this. If you have a name you want, you really should not have any problems making up a surname to fit that isn't already taken.

Unless you're GOING for unoriginal names that already exist in the real world or other media, and in that case... I'm glad they're taken by an inactive character.

It's not actually a new thing, though they would generally just flag a character for rename before deleting an inactive one. Many games do such a thing but it's usually after a lot longer than a year (unless it's like the case of WoW where you can request a name to be freed up, they'll do so if the one holding it is on an account thats been inactive for a certain time and the character is of lower level)

That said, I really don't think this game needs names cleared up. As others said it's really only an issue if you want an unoriginal name or something silly like words forming a phrase rather than an actual name.

Not going to say that I want this to happen, but MANY game companies have done name purges on inactive characters. That being said, those MMOs waited until their title was out for 3+ years before doing this. Other MMOs have done this by the sneaky method of server migration/merges. Aion actually renamed everyone and gave everyone a rename scroll and said "whoever logs in first and grabs your name, wins!". I even had a name "retaken" in WoW a few years ago. Its something that may happen in the future, but the far far far future. Anyone that wants a taken name these days needs to find a different surname (but please no more Legolassss, or Clooud, or SephirothXX).

I know League of Legends does this. If you don’t log into the account for over a year it sends out a warning that if you don’t log in within 30 days or so, it will release your account name and make it available to someone else to use. Your physical account will still be there, you will just need to make a new username if someone else hasn’t taken your original username. I remember getting one of these a long time ago (before LoL got popular).

They could implement something like this with logging into Mog Station and verifying that you want to still keep this character's name, without the need to pay for a subscription to log in.

I have 4 characters total, and one of them is a Lv1 character with a unique name. I'll be using him once my girlfriend comes to the U.S. on the fiancée visa so we can play together. She lives in Japan right now.
