cant equip any gear

My friend is playing the trial version on PC and im on PS4 and have been playing for quite some time.

He started today and when he got some gear for his character it told him that he cant equip it. He is a lvl 7 thaumaturge and is trying to equip lvl 5 (ALL CLASS) mage gear and it refuses to let him. I know there are massive restrictions on trial players but being unable to equip any gear must be a bug.

It's possible that he's trying to equip a piece of equipment that covers multiple slots, and doesn't have inventory space for the adidional item that needs to be unequiped.

hes lvl 7 there isnt any gear like that yet for him for another couple lvls
and again hes lvl 7 with this being the only gear he has.. is bags are almost 100% empty

hes in the basic outfit you start with and it wont let him equip a hat. Only hat he has into an empty space so even if his head section of his bag was full it wouldnt matter cause its not replacing an item.

Hes got the full lvl 5 first set of armor you can buy from a merchant.. all that hempen cloth armor with the +1 to int and mind (all class armor type) with no conflicting pieces. EX. robe/w head and trying to equip a helm

Did he try to equip it again. It might be that he accidentaly dragged it to the wrong equipment slot.
