Retainer Class question

So I just unlocked Retainer Ventures and I have no idea how to unlock the classes for them. The way the active help explained it it seemed like I needed to be the class before I could assign it to a retainer, is that how it works?

1. You need to actually have the class unlocked for yourself to assign it to your retainer.

2. Your retainer's max level in that class is your own level in that class minus five. For example, if you're a level 45 botanist, your retainer's max level in botanist is 40. An exception is made once you're at level 50, which allows your retainer to go up to level 50.
