I figured out my issue, apparently having your config settings too high will cause you to d/c from the server.
I'm not sure if this will work for you all, but it's worth a try ^^
Try to optimize your video card's RAM usage with the game settings.
- Set your config settings to roughly mid/high-range (or lower if needed)
Something like this:
General Drawing: 7
Background Drawing: 4
Shadows: Standard
Multisampling: 2 MSAA
Textures: High
Texture Filtering: High
Ambient Occlusion: disabled
Field of Depth: disabled
I download this freeware application called GPU-Z, which monitors real time your GPU usage.
you can find the applciation here: http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/
- Launch GPU-Z, then start FFXIV in windowed mode so you can check GPU-Z to see how much video RAM FFXIV is using in comparison to your max RAM on the vid card.
- Park your character in a semi-congested area (like the strip near Uldah Adv Guild) since all of the surrounding activity will cause the game to use more of your video memory.
- Check GPU-Z, under the Sensors tab you will see the GPU Memory usage. Ideally you will want the memory usage to be about 60% - 70% (saving the other 30% - 40% for battle/spell/teleport effects while fighting monsters in the field).
- Adjust your FFXIV config settings accordingly to get you memory usage into that 60-70% range.
Recommendations:
- Always leave Ambient Occlusion and Field of Vision turned off, play with the other settings.
- Start with General Drawing since it has a huge impact on video memory usage. Move this setting up or down by 1, then log back in and check the GPU memory usage again. You may find that by lowering this setting and freeing up that RAM usage, you will be able to raise other settings like Texture Filtering and Multisampling.
I did this and finally got my settings tuned in with my vid card well enough where I no longer disconnected from the server every 5-10 minutes. I was also running about 40-45 fps in the field, and 30 fps in Uldah.
*Side Note*
After all was said and done, I was able to play again. But honestly I didn't like my settings being lowered and the game didn't look as crisp as I wanted it to. So I bought a new video card (EVGA geForce 460GTX SC). I highly recommend this card for those of you on a tight budget and cant afford to sink your hard earned money into a high end card. It is roughly $160, EVGA currently has a $20 rebate for this card as well.
My current FFXIV settings and performance using the new EVGA geForce 460 GTX SC card:
General Drawing: 8
Background Drawing: 4 (didn't notice a difference at 5 so i opted to keep my frame rate by stay at 4)
Shadows: High (Again, not really a big difference between Very High and High so I kept my frame rate)
Multisampling: 16xQ MSAA (maxed)
Textures: High (maxed)
Texture Filtering: Very High (maxed)
Ambient Occlusion: disabled
Field of Depth: disabled (I can actually turn this on and still run great, I lose around 8-10 frames a second but I keep it off mostly because I don't care much for how it looks)
FPS in Uldah: 40~
FPS in Field: 60+
The game runs incredibly smooth now, no hitches or hiccups. I did not d/c once last night and the in game menus load and operate a lot faster now.
I hope this helps some of you out, I really feel your pain!
