In FFVIII Alexander's attacks inflicted holy aspected damage, even his card had a holy element.

I get what you're saying though, the reoccurring elements are reinterpreted every game to some extent or another. But Being of a holy element and being mechanical I think are Alexander's two defining features. To change one would be like making chocobos large, yellow, rideable lizards and not birds. It could probably be done, but it would be a hard sell.
