That's highly dependent on A) the game's architecture, B) the server's architecture, and C) the database architecture.And seriously... indulge me this:
How come Final Fantasy XI can do partial maintenance, where players don't even have to log out (usually just have to zone out from affected zones), and Final Fantasy XIV - A "Realm Reborn", has to do a "full" logout maintenance everytime?
I've been pointing this out in various thread many... many times. Could someone really explain and not treating us like fools?
I was sitting tight for that armoire update like I was told.
And... no armoire update. ;_;
Thought I was the only one who was thinking this LOL.
Is valentines gear a zone? Yeah.And seriously... indulge me this:

If there's anything I've learned from playing other MMOs, there are ALWAYS things in EVERY patch that are NOT listed in the notes.

Maybe they forgot to include what else was changed... right?
Great community btw
I work in IT world, server side specifically. Maintenance windows just for hardware alone are usually a minimum of 2 hours. So 3 hours is quite normal. As others have stated before, it would be utterly pointless for SE to start listing all the hardware specific handling that they do during the maintance itself.
In fact, to powerdown a server alone, or take it out of the cluster it's in, can take up to 45 minutes. It's all dependant on how their servers are setup. Add to that the fact that you can't just implement something new in your software and just fire everything up again. I'm sure they test these things in a live enviroment, but actually implementing it requires a few checks too before you go back live.
Come on folks, it's not just a simple thing that you just add in a few seconds. Step back and look at the bigger picture.
No worse than the time they did an emergency update to make retainers actually be able to get metallic gold dye.
These are merely the changes to the game that we can notice. It doesn't mean this is all they did... Maintenance is meant to do server reboots, minor database updates, and many other things in the background to improve the stability of your general gameplay experience.
They need to do such maintenance windows regularly to keep the game in working order.
Some people complain and have no idea how pointless and silly their complaint is in this thing we call "reality".
