And here I am wondering why in a game where people can dress like they came out of Tron, I cannot have a plain T-shirt.

If you look into historical outfits, there were MUCH more elaborate designs instituted before the simple t-shirt. "plain" T-shirts only really became popular because they're cheap to produce, buy, replace, and decorate thanks to mass production.
Eorzea, however, doesn't have proper mass production. Thus each piece of clothing is either made in an incredibly simple fashion (smocks, robes, and the like) or an elaborate work of art.
Plus the regular t-shirt can be a little...immersion breaking.
Since the t-shirt was based on underwear from the 19th century, it kinda would. The circumstances for the popularity of the t-shirt don't exist in eorzea, while the circumstances for a lot of the other clothes (yes, including the chocobo and moogle suits and bikinis) currently exist. The camise and undershirt items currently occupy the role the t-shirt did around its popularization.
If we DO get a t-shirt, it'll most likely have buttons on it. A "plain" t-shirt without buttons would be, well, plain. And very few garments in this game can be considered "plain" beyond color.
Technically they're based off of ancient tech in combination with steampunk-esque tech. The allagans kinda had a tron aesthetic going for them that Garlond Ironworks copied. Magical runes can strongly resemble "tech" tron lines, after all.
I don't know, there's only 300 years between bikinis and t-shirts and real life. And the Ironworks gear? That is so absurdly futuristic. With such armor in-game, I don't think ANY kind of clothing at this point would be immersion-breaking.
Well that is the power of Magitek.
With Magitek main source of advancement is combining Magic and Technology they can eeasily create things thousands of years ahead of their time as the Garlean Empire has shown due to how it harness Aether as a pure source of energy.
Heck the Ironworks Gears and Weapons are only the Generation 1 versions of their future planned mass produced weapons and gears.
