Actually, it wouldn't. The way the armoire works isn't "storing" an item so much as it is "registering" it and allowing you to retrieve it for free. It basically IS exactly what you're asking for in practice. This is why you can't store "altered" items.
So the difference is less "huge" and more "minuscule" from a practicality standpoint, since the game has to account for every single glamour you've ever encountered, list them, their icons, and the model for the actual items. The only thing it wouldn't have from the actual physical item is the stats, which take up less of the item's "space" than you'd think.

Just like how we have a minion guide and a mount guide, why not add a glamour guide? You can add any projectable item to the list, but you give up the item. To make things even easier on the server, the item could revert to its unaltered, undyed form. The game already lets you dye a glamoured piece without it affecting the original item it's imitating. And you should still require prisms to glamour an item.

Among the things Guild Wars 2 did right, they added a Glamour Data Storage where every gear you collected and/or broken down for mats is stored in the Glamour Data Storage for your character to use anytime at the price of some of GW2 Glamour currency.

FF14 could use a similar system so players won't have to store up a bunch of gear that takes up space.
