Actually, it wouldn't. The way the armoire works isn't "storing" an item so much as it is "registering" it and allowing you to retrieve it for free. It basically IS exactly what you're asking for in practice. This is why you can't store "altered" items.
So the difference is less "huge" and more "minuscule" from a practicality standpoint, since the game has to account for every single glamour you've ever encountered, list them, their icons, and the model for the actual items. The only thing it wouldn't have from the actual physical item is the stats, which take up less of the item's "space" than you'd think.
