Seals for instance can allow you to buy the items to craft the "token items" IE Potash is used to make Vanya Silk. Vanya Silk is used to trade for 3 Star books. So, Weavers would want to buy potash to make vanya silk to turn it in for the book.

Keep in mind though, to buy these materials, You might have to rank up to the last rank of your Grand Company

Im not sure for the soldiery items but, what you can do is search each item up on the marketboard, see how much are going for and at what price each were sold for, and sell the one you think will sell the most.

and as other have said, you can probably net in 5k-20k gil daily depending on what you do. Don't forget that the Challenge Log can provide a good amount of gil weekly. Remember, spend on what you need and not what you want LOl. If all you care for gear and progress, Gil isnt really "needed" unless your attempting novus

I leveled black Mage before working on miner and goldsmith and managed to make enough Gil to get by, selling the tin-gold pieces you get from doing quests, as well as the little bit you get from leves, dungeons, etc and from selling odds and ends (gear/materia I didn't need, low end drops from mobs and whatnot). It's not a lot, I rarely busted 100k til I started on gathering/crafting but it was enough to get me by. At higher Ilvl, better farming and gil-making opportunities will open up to you, though you really have to keep your eyes open. I had some friends make quite a bit buying crafting mats with sold and reselling them on market a while back, and I've made a fair amount off of Allagan leathers from BCOB until recently. Though, it will probably help you with expenses to level a craft and a gatherer alongside your DOW/M class so you can craft much of your own gear, even if you aren't planning to put a lot of effort into crafting in the long run. Just some things to think about...

for the large part i had and was making most of my money from gathering (shards sell for crazy amounts) but crafting is a great source of income. Also you can spend GC seals (from fates and such) on things like coke and potash which usually sell for good amounts of gil.
Ixali Beast Tribe is a great source to level crafters and make gil. Once you are at full rank you have access to ehcahl sealant which roughly can sell between say 180K - up each
If you have not done coil, t4 drops some allagan mats which may yet be another source of income.

Do levequests for gil and items to sell
Sell everything you get on the market board for prices that make sense
Roll at least greed on everything in dungeons for seal turn-ins and possibly selling
Do beast tribe dailies, Ixali is best for money, but would require gathering/craft
Do quick ventures, use company seals for quick ventures, sell what they find

You can make plenty of money without a crafting class

Beware tho the shards/ crystals / clusters market r a fantastic place for bot pricing to breed.
So if ur gonna sell ur going to have to make ur listings stand out if you want to get ur stuff sold.
You can sell lower quantities for a slightly higher price for ppl who just want 50 shards instead of 200 lol. Or u can sell an almost similar quantity but at a lower price. Cuz the listings will never be empty due to 24/7 shard farming bots XD.

1/ Friend with a crafter and ask him to make crafted gears lv 50 for Battle Gears or lv 35-40/50 Crafting gears with your mats. Go out and SB. You will either tons of Gil or double your profit, never be a loss.
2/ If you already have 1 50 Crafting class, do Ixali daily beast tribe to get the Knots. Use them to trade for Sealant at the cost of 8 Knots, then sell them. Each goes for over 100k at the moment.
3/ Easiest way is to buy an item during the weekend and sell it after the rest for a higher price (with fee included) and profit. Though, this is just a small change comparing to the others two methods.

If you're into mindless grinding - spiritbonding is probably your best bet. Grab some vendor gear from Mor Dhona, go to Urth's Fount and join a spiritbonding party there, pop your SB potion, and SB for 3 hours. Crafting/gathering materia tend to give you stable returns, but with battle materia, you can either hit the jackpot, or not come close - pick your poison.
