I think instead of repairing it while it's equipped, there should be an easier method to unequipped and label it in need of repair. Maybe by selecting the item, another window appears giving you the option to directly place as in need of repair.

I kinda like this idea more. As much as the original suggestion would be convenient, if we're going to give a nod to realism, this seems the least obtrusive way to do it.
