    Combat / Leveling Questions

Hi there! Sorry for being a bother, but I've got some questions about the game. I've never played a FF game, mainly games like EQ2/WoW/AoC/Rift/Aion. I wanted something different, so I'm really excited. I've loved what I've seen so far.

About me: Level 8 | Conjurer

However, the combat seems a bit odd? For example, I have an enemy target, press 2, it tells me to locate a target (which is obviously the enemy I previously selected?), I have to click the target again because if I try to tab, it goes to another, and then finally my character will start casting. Is there a way I can turn off selecting a target after selecting a spell? It seems incredibly slow and convoluted because of it.

When I allot points in the elemental part of the attributes, is that a magical resistance or a magical increase with those particular proficiencies?

I finished the Court in the Sands questline (yay! Loved it, hope there are lots like it). I've been to Camp Black Brush, and done Moles for the Mauling. I finished it, a little atheryte appeared, I *think* I turned it in, and teleported back to the camp. However, it's still in my journal, and I have yet to get other quests for another camp.

I've just been killing the little level 2/3's around the camp. I went exploring, and ran into some lvl 59 road runners, haha.

So I guess my question is, what do I do? Do I just keep killing the level 2/3's? I'm just kinda... lost.

Other than those things, I'm excited about the game.

I've done some more searching, and finally figured out what people meant by Behest. Gave one a try that was for R5, and lvl 19 reds that came in pairs were required to be killed. I died instantly. I shouted to see if others were doing it. I got nothing. Am I supposed to be able to solo these things?

Hi, Miss. Glad to hear you're having fun.

That screen allows you to do two things. First, it allows you to switch targets on the fly. If you're in a party, and you're targeting a mob, you can select a "Cure" spell, and that screen will allow you to switch to curing your party member (as opposed to the mob) without changing your primary designated target. In other words, you can nuke, nuke, nuke, ... oh wait, someone needs a heal, press Cure, switch to party member, and then go directly back to nuke, nuke, nuke.

Second, it allows you to switch the Area of Effect toggle. That's the green button that comes up. When it's lit up, your spell is going to AoE. When it's not lit up, your spell is going to be single target. That's actually the primary function of that second selection function. It asks you to confirm whether you want a single target spell, or AoE.

Right now, there's no way to get rid of that. But they're planning to change the AoE system, since they think it's cumbersome.

The way I simplify it is -- instead of clicking on the mob a second time -- I just hit the "Enter" key.
When I allot points in the elemental part of the attributes, is that a magical resistance or a magical increase with those particular proficiencies?
Both. If you increase your water attribute, it increase the damage caused by your water spells. It also increases your defense against elemental spells that water is strong against. So you'll need to check out the elemental chart to figure out which element water is strong again. But here's generally how it works:

    Wind > Fire > Ice > Wind
    Lightning > Water > Earth > Lightning

Water is strong against Earth. So increasing your water element will increase your defense against Earth-based attacks.
I finished the Court in the Sands questline (yay! Loved it, hope there are lots like it). I've been to Camp Black Brush, and done Moles for the Mauling. Leves stay in your journal until you pick up new ones at the next leve reset.

The primary purpose for this appears to be allowing you to "turn in" completed leves for greater rewards. When you pick up new leves after the server reset, it gives you the option to "turn in" the leves that you just completed. You can click on up to 4 leves to "turn in." Each of the leves will have a number next to it. The higher the number next to the leves, it will increase the reward you get for the leve you're just picking up. It's kind of a reward multiplier effect.
So I guess my question is, what do I do? Do I just keep killing the level 2/3's? I'm just kinda... lost.
I see you're already tried behest. The reason low level behests are so frequently empty is because people level past it so quickly.

At around level 5, you can probably move to the rank 10 camp (In La Noscea, that's going to be Skull Valley. I think in Uldah, that's Camp Drybone.) That's where all your rank 10 leves are going to be. And it's where the rank 10 behest is going to be. And it's also where some higher level mobs are going to be.

I assume you're soloing. Here's a solo guide posted by Azury on the Lodestone forums. Feel free to check out some of those locations.

You can also do crafting leves. Go back to the leve counter, and talk to the guy next to the guy who gave you the battlecraft leves. You can pick up 8 "local" (i.e., crafting) leves every 36 hours. They give you the mats to craft (or you have to pick them up from some NPC in town). It's free XP and free levels!

You can also do side quests, which will give you more XP and frequently gear as a reward.
