What ever happened to Automations and Magitech?

Does anyone remember in the Main story when we had a Magitech armor retrofitted with a Automation's core from the gold smiths guild? When we were escaping it began moving about confusing the heck out of the Garliand troops because there was no pilot in side? Then it saves us at the end by being there to help us escape again?

So what exactly is the lore about this? It seems that we inadvertently discovered Automations can be used as the brain of a Magitech Suit and basicly make it self running. Given their surprise, Garliand never knew or realized such a thing was possible. Given the time our Magitech was in their hands. Didn't they try to dissect it to see how or why it began operating by itself? Could this be part of the future Machinist lore? Was this aspect of the main scenario cut or forgotten?

    Thoughts?

It was essentially the core of a mammet. On the off-chance it would work, the Ironworks rigged Maggie the Magitek Reaper to integrate with a mammet heart so that it could compensate for damage and regulate its systems without hard to obtain Garlean parts that couldn't be acquired in a time crunch.

A lot of the Garleans are just footsoldiers trying to keep the war machine moving. The response to weird behavior from a single magitek would probably just be to patch it up, run some tests, and ship it out. It took a lot for Maggie to actually take to us in any way beyond simple input-response; she ignored us otherwise for a little while, at first. She may have just stayed dormant while the Garleans were doing tests and shipping her off to the Praetorium.

As for the broad implications, I've always just assumed that it was a special case - that Biggs and Wedge threw some weight behind a theoretically possible Hail Mary and, even though it worked out, it wasn't efficient, practical, or reliable technology.

Basis for future lore? ... Maybe! I've forgotten a lot of the mammet lore...

Joking aside, I doubt it will play much of a part in the future. Unless of course we do get something like Puppetmaster and the Automatons are used as "pets."

Well, you also have to remember that the Garleans also built the magitek armour for a specific purpose -a form of armoured transportation. To them, it's basically little more than a single seat walking tank - it's the Garleans' 'steeds' used by their cavalry (like in Eorzea, they'd use mounted soldiers on chocobos, like what the player has).

Having said that, it's clear that Garlemald does in fact know about automation technology - the FFXIV website itself all but screams that fact in it's description of the magitek vanguards, stating that they're autonomous, meaning they probably run according to some rudimentary artificial intelligence, not too dissimilar to the mammets found in Eorzea (although considerably more advanced of course).

NE※GIGIGI★※... BuGgEr OfF, gReEnHoRn. You never know, there are a lot of hints. Gigi's true name is Mnejing, and Ovjang is a mob now. Likewise, mammets and pugilists come from the same city. Perhaps we'll see something like that, someday.

Brushing up on mentions of mammets. The one that went into Maggie was new, which means it had no accumulated memories, experiences, or personality. Moreover, there's this little gem, which might be foreshadowing in your direction.

And the servomechanism should be... Wait! A mammet core!? Why didn't I think of that!? They're so easy to come by, mass production would be as easy as stealing candy from a baby...or cores from a mammet.

It was also mentioned that the mammet core that went into Maggie was not an easy fit - apparently Cid, Biggs and Wedge had to do a lot of modifications to get the component to work (not surprising, given that the mammet core was the closest possible analogous part available in Eorzea to the Garlean-made servomechanism that they had to replace - a servomechanism incidentally is a real world electrical/mechanical device. ).

Meaning that although it's possible with a bit of refinement and trial and error the process could be replicated so that more magitek vehicles could be made autonomous, the way the game has shown, Maggie seems to be pretty much unique - individuality that could be put down in part to her very existence essentially being a happy accident.

In other ways, it was a result of the magitek armour bonding with the player's character that is what managed to give her life in the first place (this is why Cid, Biggs and Wedge failed initially, she simply did not bond with them). But I'm just rambling now.

Well at one of the fan festa they talked about using the gambit system to control our magitek armor. I figured the special core and bonding would be a part of that.

I'd think that the Garleans wouldn't see too much use for a vehicle that could think freely. I assume most of their machina are programmed and have no free will, which is better for a tool than giving it the ability to develop a personality and maybe decide to disobey orders one day. You have enough of a problem with that with people.

We haven't heard anything on this for quite a while now actually. I do remember them saying they planned for us to be able to use more than just our chocobo as a combat companion, with a specific reference to the magitek mount, but we've heard nothing more since...

I'm still holding out that we'll get a puppetmaster job in the future; it was my favourite job in FFXI... the Machinist announcement for 3.0 was enough to keep me going for now though.

While translation is a large part of our job, what is not known by many is that the EN localization team plays a large role in the creation of a lot of in-game terminology and lore which is then localized back into Japanese (with liberties often taken by the Japanese team so that the text might appear more appealing to their target Japanese audience).
