3440 x 1440 video card and sli/crossfire troubles

so I want to get an ultra wide 3440 x 1440 monitor and am trying to figure out what video card I need for smooth gameplay at near max settings. I am also trying to set it up for dx11 near max settings. The problem is it seems I will need to cross fire /sli to achieve this.
It has been brought to my attention that the 3440 x 1440 Rez will only work in windowed mode yet from everything I have read xfire/sli will not work in windowed mode. If true this obviously provides quite the dilemma. Does anyone have any experience with this and is it true?
Also, for those gaming at this Rez what card are you using, what's your fps and settings? As this is the only game I play I want to spend as little as necessary for this setup.

I use 2560x1440 res with a single R9 290x and get anywhere between 50-100 FPS on Max.
Crowded areas won't seem to go above 50 no matter what.

So you should be fine with a 290x or GTX 980.

Crossfire/Sli only works in Full Screen.

You can do 2560x1440 res in Full Screen but not sure about your res.

I'm thinking that I may go with a 295x as I'm concerned about heating issues with xfire 290x and the 295x is water cooled.
I'm also curious if the 295 can operate both cores in full screen as it's not xfired to 2 slots

3440x1440 does work in full screen, ive downsampled this game with that very resolution, if someone couldnt full screen it, they must be having issues on their end of things.

I'm planning on testing this theory today on lunch. Granted it will look like crap as I'm playing a 29inch tv currently but at least I can test if it is playable at that Rez on full screen mode. I'll just create a custom Rez and pull that up in ff and see how it goes.

It should be, 1 GPU has enough Vram, and the gpus should provide the grunt, just bare in mind you must get a display port cable, this should allow you to play over 30 FPS in dungeons, I get 45ish FPS in 8 mans with that resolution with a single 780, I am a 60 FPS nut though.

Been out of the GPU game for a while. What about after the dx11 update? Think dual 970 would still be good? What about single 980? I would rather stick to a single card if at all possible. Ffxiv just doesn't seem to like sli

Plus my mobo is from 2010. Only has pcie 2.0 and does x8/x8 with 2 cards. Don't even know if two will fit for sure on my mobo.

I think 8x 8x is the nvidia min requirement for SLI, however I still would go single card.
Now a single 980 is at best 30% better then a 780, so its pushing it really, now Im sure the FPS will drop a bit in CT, ST and WOD, however you can always drop it to 2560x1080 if you really needed the extra FPS in something, but if you can live with some dips from 60 FPS, a 980 should do fine but the added premium is meh.

A single 970 isnt that far ahead of a 780 so you most likely get the same performance as me at that resolution.

They said the DX 11 update will reign in some performance for those with DX11 cards but they never said how much by buy 10% is good enough for me.

Also I would reccomend the AOC version, has a height adjustable stand if you actually bought one of these thats used in that video.
