Probably the closest equivalent to hunts in FFXI were the HNMs. It was not long after they added the HNMs to the game that people had worked out nigh-foolproof strategies for killing them. Thus, the only "skill" involved in hunting these mobs was who was able to mash Provoke (or Steal or whatever fast job ability) to claim the monster first. Due to the no-sharing claim system in FFXI, that meant that only one group would get any sort of reward. Due to the fact that these monsters spawned only once per day with a three-hour spawning window, this meant that the other groups who walked away empty handed had been standing around for as many as three hours, finger poised over the provoke button, barely even daring to breathe for fear that they might miss that split second opening. (Even worse, generally players ACTUALLY wanted to claim the HQ version of that HNM, which would randomly spawn in place of the HNM every three days or so.)
Since remaining tense for hours at a time is stressful, and doing so only to fail to actually succeed in claiming the mob is a real downer, it's only natural that folks started turning to bots to do the claiming for them. Not only are they likely to beat the reaction time of humans, but they allow you to relax while you wait; read a book, watch TV, even sleep if the bot includes a sufficently noisy alarm.
Claiming a monster is LUCK not SKILL. That's not really what I call a "competition". Actually killing a monster is where the skill should be involved - and Hunt mobs don't take a lot of skill to kill. And, to be frankly honest, even if SE DID add claimable overworld mobs to the game that required skill to kill, it wouldn't be long before gear progression outpaced the need for skill, given the crazy fast pace with which gear becomes obsolete in this game.
So, yeah, if competitive PvE is going to be added to this game, Hunts are not well-designed for it, and never have been. Hunts are a grind, and that's about it.
I haven't played FFXI in ages, but was this something added in later or since launch? I recall you could join in someone elses fight, you just wouldn't get items... maybe I am miss remembering.
Anyway, the point is a person sitting on the mob by themselves isn't going to last long anyway.
What they ended up doing with many NMs was making them poppable via an item you were use on a target ??? where the NM was to be fought. The party or alliance grouped with the player who spawned it claimed it. That group would either kill it for the chance at loot, or wipe and lose their chance and need to get another token item to pop it again. I don't think two different groups could pop it at the same time, but this system did allow for players to come spawn the NM they wanted to kill anytime of their choosing, rather than having to camp for hours and then spam w/e ability they would use to claim when the window was open in hopes that thier party/alliance got the claim and could fight it against many other groups of players and probably not get the claim.I haven't played FFXI in ages, but was this something added in later or since launch? The pop system was a definite improvement. But honestly I wouldn't want something like that for Hunts. Hunts are fine the way they are right now. You don't get there fast enough you miss out, tough luck.
Oooh i'd like a claim system, would be more fun than what we got now. (use 3 attacks and hunt is dead, full reward, good job you earned that illv 130 gear!!!)

So...you want less than 1% of the game's population to be able to earn allied seals and upgrade their gear.
Are you trying to turn this into Wildstar? Just what FFXIV needs: a mass exodus of players...
If you're going to do this, you need some other means of earning allied seals.
Better yet, add more rare spawns for this system and make them drop unique loot instead of seals.
It was that way from NA launch, but I haven't played in about 6 years so they might have changed it. In the early days of HNM/gods, it wasn't uncommon for healers to be outside the alliance fighting him, and for mages to be swapped in and out of the alliance while recovering MP.I haven't played FFXI in ages, but was this something added in later or since launch? All it takes is a couple people at the mob and they can hold it while the rest of the group gathers up, and several dozen people just stand there watching.
The reason this Fails is because we all know that there are people on each server Using Hunt location programs
putting a "Claim" does one thing and one thing only and that is give the Cheaters a lock down on ever single Hunt .
Easiest way to fix hunts is to put a real weekly cap on them like Poetics have.
Hunts are the easiest content in the game and by far the most rewarding for the minimal time/effort needed ,,
when people leave raids and dungeons to go kill a Hunt mob your game design has failed.
want to fix Hunts
Add in 2 types of seals
Allied for A ranks : used for the 100 gear/items/misc/ and upgrades to 100 items etc . Capped at : 2000 seals a week , each A rank gives 500 Seals when killed
Allegiance for S ranks : Capped at : 500 seals a week , each S rank gives 100 Allegiance seals , these seals can be used only to upgrade : Carbon twine cost 800 Allegiance Seals, upgrade Carbon coat 350 Allegiance seals
Make S ranks spawn every hour .
there , the above works ,, kill your 4 A ranks and 5 S ranks in a week and your capped , this frees up hunts for everyone else , everybody can get their kills and cap in a week , it cuts out all the drama , and makes hunts a Viable alternative for everyone
and the best thing about it ,,, is that people would actually have to Make their own groups to go and HUNT with because nobody is going to wander around calling out hunt locations constantly once they are capped = Hunts you actually have to.... HUNT !
