    Fishing gear

So I have HQ fishing gear as I saved.up the gil and fully melded. Am I to assume unless I farm millions to buy forgers gear I can forget about big fish? With food I only hit 312 gathering. Worried I've hit a wall

I am sure you can still go and catch HQ Silver Sovereigns for your Forager's Fishing Rod. That was what I did and I still don't have a piece of Forager's gear (besides the rod). In turn that will put your Gathering/Perception even higher, helping you aim for those big fish

Your problem is most likely your fishing rod.So farm 20 HQ silver sovereign to get the forager rod, then 10 HQ for the forager hat. Then afterward you should farm olgoi-khorkhoi to be able to turn them in for your supra weapon.

Like the above two posters said, your mainhand is the biggest upgrade. For Botanist and Miner, your offhand (Forager) is usually the biggest upgrade while you're questing your Forager/Supra/Lucis.

Don't forget to use i70 crafted DoW/DoM accessories melded with +5 gathering and +5 perception. FSH doesn't need GP, so don't use the i55 +GP ones. You can get up to 318 Gathering without food with no Forager equipment, and all the melds are super cheap (most use just Grade 1-2 materia which you can farm super fast using vendor-bought level 15 gear and fighting level ~25 djiggas in East Shroud). Here's the build: http://ffxiv.ariyala.com/PFUA

With fully melded AF left side and fully melded i70 accessories, you can catch all Big Fish from 2.1 and earlier (not that there were many). You can also catch some 2.2 Big Fish, including the HQ Silver Sovereigns needed to get the Forager's Rod and Hat (if you have BTN or MIN at 50, get the hat from BTN/MIN tokens instead of from Silver Sovereigns as it will take like 1/5th the time). In total, there are 11 Big Fish you can catch with your 312 Gathering, 12 you can catch with the fully melded value of 318 Gathering, and 46 you can catch with 340 Gathering (318 + HQ Spinach Quiche).

With the Forager's Rod and Forager's Hat, you can catch all Big Fish from 2.2 and earlier, along with most 2.3 Big Fish, including the 3x NQ Olgoi Khorkoi needed to get your Halcyon Supra rod. You'll have to use food for some of it. There are 71 Big Fish you can catch with 349 Gathering (full melds, no food), and 93 Big Fish you can catch with 373 Gathering (full melds, HQ Spinach Quiche)

With the Halcyon Supra rod, you can catch all Big Fish from 2.3 and earlier, along with most 2.4 Big Fish. You can also catch the only 2.5 Big Fish - Gigant Clams, which you need for your Halcyon Lucis rod (actually, you could catch the Gigant Clams without the Supra as they only take 348 Gathering, but you need the Supra to get the Lucis anyway, so you might as well get it first). You'll have to use food for some of it. There are 89 Big Fish you can catch with 359 Gathering (full melds, no food), and 101 Big Fish you can catch with 383 Gathering (full melds, HQ Spinach Quiche)

With just the Lucis and AF gear, you can catch 104-106 Big Fish and 1 Legendary Fish without food, and with HQ Spinach Quiche, you can catch all 106 Big Fish and all 6 Legendary Fish.

As a random side note, with just the Supra rod, the Forager's set, even with HQ Spinach Queue, does NOT give you enough Gathering to catch every fish. You can catch all 106 Big Fish, but only 5 of the Legendary Fish (one takes 406 Gathering and you'll only have 399 with the Supra). You need to get either the Ironworks or Lucis rods. And, even with the Lucis rod and Forager's set, to catch the biggest fish (Nepto Dragon), you'll need to eat something, even if it's just the cheapest merchant food (NQ Rabbit Pie).

So, to recap, to catch every fish in the game, you need one of:
    • Halcyon Rod Lucis + HQ Spinach Quiche
    • Ironworks Fishing Rod + Forager's set + HQ Tomato Pie (or NQ Spinach Quiche)
    • Halcyon Rod Lucis + Forager's Set + NQ Rabbit Pie (19 gil from vendors)

    Fishing milestones:
    • 300 Gathering: Blue Swimwear Big Fish (Octomammoth + Gigant Shark)
    • 303 Gathering: Silver Sovereigns (20x HQ needed for Forager's Rod)
    • 339 Gathering: Red Swimwear Bottom + Summer Sandals Big Fish (Twitchbeard + Shark Tuna)
    • 348 Gathering: Olgoi Khorkoi (3x NQ needed for Supra Rod (along with 10x Fieldcraft Demimateria IIIs and 1x Mastercraft Demimateria))
    • 348 Gathering: Gigant Clams (30x HQ needed for Lucis Rod (along with 20x Moonstones and 60x Glacier Crystals))
    • 380 Gathering: Red Swimwear Top Big Fish (Frilled Shark)
    • 385-387 Gathering: All 106 Big Fish
    • 399 Gathering: All Legendary Fish except Nepto Dragon
    • 406 Gathering: Nepto Dragon

    Gathering values with various gear:
    • 318 Gathering: Fully melded AF + Halcyon Rod
    • 334 Gathering: Fully melded Forager's + Halcyon Rod
    • 340 Gathering: Fully melded AF + Halcyon Rod + HQ Spinach Quiche
    • 349 Gathering: Fully melded AF + Forager's Rod
    • 357 Gathering: Fully melded Forager's + Halcyon Rod + HQ Spinach Quiche
    • 359 Gathering: Fully melded AF + Halcyon Rod Supra
    • 365 Gathering: Fully melded Forager's + Forager's Rod
    • 371 Gathering: Fully melded AF + Ironworks Fishing Rod
    • 373 Gathering: Fully melded AF + Forager's Rod + HQ Spinach Quiche
    • 375 Gathering: Fully melded Forager's + Halcyon Rod Supra
    • 383 Gathering: Fully melded AF + Halcyon Rod Supra + HQ Spinach Quiche
    • 385 Gathering: Fully melded AF + Halcyon Rod Lucis
    • 387 Gathering: Fully melded Forager's + Ironworks Fishing Rod
    • 389 Gathering: Fully melded Forager's + Forager's Rod + HQ Spinach Quiche
    • 395 Gathering: Fully melded AF + Ironworks Fishing Rod + HQ Spinach Quiche
    • 399 Gathering: Fully melded Forager's + Halcyon Rod Supra + HQ Spinach Quiche
    • 401 Gathering: Fully melded Forager's + Halcyon Rod Lucis
    • 409 Gathering: Fully melded AF + Halcyon Rod Lucis + HQ Spinach Quiche
    • 411 Gathering: Fully melded Forager's + Ironworks Fishing Rod + HQ Spinach Quiche
    • 425 Gathering: Fully melded Forager's + Halcyon Rod Lucis + HQ Spinach Quiche
So, it is untrue that lacking the Forager's set is preventing you from progressing. You can actually catch every fish in the game without ever getting the Forager's set, you'll just need more expensive food for the trickier fish.
