I'm afraid it's too late for this game to have such FF jobs as the core of the game.
I hope they've only just begun to balance classes because to me they all still feel the same.
Class uniqueness won't be achievable by just switching around skills and tweaking stats. Give us different gameplay depending on the job we use.
For example let knights and BLMs combine their skills like I Steiner and Vivi did. Give the gun class long range sniper gameplay with the goal on killing the mob before it gets too close rather than having just another ARC class.
Make chocobo knights into a class where the stats of the chocobo are just as important as your own skills. Make a class similiar to PUP where skills are controlled through a different menu or a Summoner class where MP preservation is completely different and you get to control 2 characters at once.
Those are just few examples from XI and other FF titles how jobs have offered different gameplay not just different graphics. I'd hate for them to go through all this trouble and still every battle is attack the enemy--->wait until the end of battle and repeat.
Thats what i was swinging at but I may have overdone it and got over bias'd with my previous experiences.I would like to see class - weapon binding dropped at some point. I suspect that, should they decide to drop classes to go ALL Job... they will wait a few months to a year in order to lessen the impact of suddenly dropping everyone's max rank classes in order to restart... That or a way to pick Jobs to convert one's classes to.

Thanks for contributing!
No thanks.
This is my gut feeling regarding this too. It would be a big impact with people's efforts but then again, they are doing other drastic changes to the game and people did vote for this. They could always compensate in many ways. If they do end up taking this path, i suspect it will take a while too and in that case I would hope sooner than later, no more wasted time needed with this game taking more damaging hits.I would like to see class - weapon binding dropped at some point. FFT definitely had an awesome job system, i'd love for it to be something similar to that as a refreshing change, doesn't necessarily have to be a copy of XI. Just something that makes sense and works great and enjoyable.
Description:"There are 34 "jobs" in Tactics Advance that govern a character's stats, equipment, and abilities. Most items that can be equipped have various abilities assigned to them, each available for use by characters of a certain job while the item is equipped. When a battle is completed, characters will receive Ability Points (AP) distributed over their currently equipped weapons or items (such as armor). Once a target amount of AP has been accumulated for a given ability, the character will master that ability, allowing the character to use them at any time, regardless of items equipped and job chosen. Mastery of abilities in different jobs will eventually allow the character access to more jobs. For example, if a human unit wishes to change jobs to Paladin, it needs to master at least two "action" abilities from the "soldier" job.[5]I like the fact that races also play a bigger role than just looks and slight difference in attributes. Would be nice to make each race unique in what they can offer. This wasn't the case in FFT though. Interesting to know of.
Units have a primary job which determines the stat boosts they receive when they level up and the attributes associated with that class. A unit may also have a secondary job set of abilities, where it can use any abilities of the selected job, but with the stat profile of the primary job. For example, an Assassin with a Sniper secondary job could use abilities from both jobs, but has the stat profile and appearance of an Assassin, its primary job. This may deny the use of some abilities depending on their equipped weapon. In the previous example, any abilities that require the possession of a great bow, will not be allowed for use if the character has a Katana equipped.[5]
Tactics Advance also introduces five playable races: Humans, the small rodentlike Moogles, the strong lizard-like Bangaa, the agile rabbit-like Viera, and the magically-skilled Nu Mou. Certain jobs are only available to certain races. Along with the abilities obtained with experience, each race has a guardian beast called a "Totema" to represent whom and which can be summoned to whose aid when a member of that race has 10 Judge Points, that is after your clan has defeated that Totema as part of the main story line.[6]"
We will, where will your population for XIV be?
Solution: Take what works, make it better. Profit.
Original FFXIV Solution: Take what works, throw it out, release the game unfinished, spend 2 years overhauling it, hope for the best with the PS3 launch.
You do realize they were hoping people moved to XIV right? They explicitly stated they didn't upgrade XI's engine and chose to go the route of a new MMO instead.
@OP:
It is indeed true, the current path they'll have to continually balance and tweak Class system and job system which means making this game as easy as possible because you can't have both styles of play (Solo/Group oriented) existing with perfect balance or you have to force one side to deal with the other, i.e people absolutely love leveling to cap through generic monotonous questing which means overworld grinding tends to be looked down on and so on.
While XIV reintroduced party grinding (which is fun btw) having to balance two styles of class progression just...won't end well.
Stop trying to make this into XI-2. I like the system as is.

My reply lies below:
Let me add on to that list Jennestia:By the way:
Ability to set homepoints at crystals was found in FFXI as well.
Or how about the copy pasted Races with different names from XI?
Or the never ending request to copy paste the search feature from XI?
Or Chocobos and Airships from XI?
Or Auction House request and current analysis from XI?
Or Simplified Food system from XI?
Or... someone else can continue.
Please use another line from now on Winnipeg.
SE itself isn't listening to your anti XI rants with their decisions. If they did, the game would be shut down by now.
In the end it's all about what makes the game successful and bringing the customer base and attracting the masses back.
I will point out again this is not a literal request to copy paste XI, imo system like FFT would also work perfect. It's the concept of what works rather than the idea of cloning.
